If you get the same speeds for C++ and Java, I'd like to point out that the C++ implementation is likely very sub-optimal. This can obviously be true for toy problems, but tends not to generalize.

That's because when the failure becomes the context, it can clearly express the intent of not falling for it again. However, when the original problem is the context, none of this obviousness applies. Very typical, and gives LLMs the a

The format of the article comes across as AI-sloppy. Each section is filled with numbered lists and there are several AIsms, such as the omni-present "not-only-x-but-y".

Yes, works well with AMD. You can compile multi-target so that you'll have e.g. SSE4.2, AVX2, AVX512 support built to your binaries and the best (widest) version is picked by the runtime automatically.

I found this a weird article. If you wish to see some speedups using AVX512, without limiting yourself to C or C++, you might want to try ISPC ( https://ispc.github.io/index.html ). You'll get sane aliasing rules from th

I was looking forward to a post about designing sprites, i.e. little graphical blobs flying across screen. Needless to say, this was not it.

Seems you're not familiar with how game projects with a custom engine typically go. Let me elaborate on this - the steps involved are: 1. Create a custom game engine.

Do you think Intel names things poorly? NVidia has these, very different GPUs: Quadro 6000, Quadro RTX 6000, RTX A6000, RTX 6000 Ada, RTX 6000 Workstation Edition, RTX 6000 Max-Q Workstation Edition, RTX 6000 Server Edition

Likely a different compiler/version. GCC had this error for me recently: error: inlining failed in call to 'always_inline' 'float _mm512_reduce_add_ps(__m512)': target specific option mismatch

Yes, at least on AVX512 the compiler will throw a fit on trying to use intrinsics in case you haven't enabled TU-global architecture with options.

Portable multi-versioning is kind of hard to set up. E.g. compilers on Linux are not happy to emit AVX512 intrinsics when the architecture isn't enabled via -m... - this is also true for the case where you're trying to setup a dis

Delighted by the recent release of Cap'n Web, I wanted to enable writing C++ backends for it, so here's a small library helping with that. References: 1. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45332883

Yes, it's weird they used 2.0 in the original code too. Doing proper gamma for any regular space (sRGB, YUV Rec.705, etc.) isn't actually that heavy (even without LUTs).

Yeah a nice optimization, but is "return c * c;" really a good approximation of sRGB gamma?

I found the explanation quite convoluted (pun intended). Any system with billions of parameters is bound to be difficult to reason about.
