It would have been easy to have just stored that bit of session state to the server. It’d also be pretty easy to alter the HTML board to a prerendered image with imagemap click detection. At which point someones writing custom image feat

This ID is pretty much the only thing employers get to ID the workers, and thus track the quality of their work. (Which is particularly important on Turk, as anonymity seems to encourage fraud.) Everything else is push: web service calls

Good question - but it is 90% of what I see people using HTML parsers for grab the content of a single tag from a page. Which is why I often recommend "parsing" HTML with a regex. Particularly on throwaway projects. The overhead of a real p

I agree completely with this. As you point out the act is standard - but the outrage is evident in the usage of the phrase "watered down". (And it's been used repeatedly in different places across my news feeds). This means - to me at least

I’d actually guess that this is because we aren’t automotive mechanics. I’d bet there is at least a small group of automotive mechanics that are interested in increasing diversity in their field.

Boy is this new title lame. Formerly it was something like: "Pivory: the forum software that had a chance" , which told us that we weren’t supposed to be looking at the thread, but rather the software used to implement it. Which is pretty

For something published in 1990 it holds up remarkably well. It is however almost entirely conventional wisdom at this point. Which does raise the question of weather the points made became conventional wisdom because of this papers publi

I've got a user CSS file that just colors that text the same color as the header. It's not perfect - for instance right now I'm on my iPad (no browser extensions) and I can see it - but it sure helps.

I'm always surprised when I write a scraper/proxy (usually in perl) at how little added latency is involved. If I host the thing on a fat pipe (say an EC2 instance), it's not even noticeable at home.

Walk outside. My god, yesterday some guy didn't like me walking in the crosswalk, when he wanted to make a right turn so he swerved into the oncoming traffic lane to make his right (and cut me off). This versus wait 5 seconds. Annoying, ov

If we're going to be limited to the title of the original piece why not enforce this, in the code? Fetching the page and parsing out a title tag really shouldn't be too many LOC - and would stop the debate.

I believe most states allow the address of your registered agent, to be your corporate address. And of course you can hire a registered agent, so I don't think this is a major problem.
