Too much bloody work. Too heavy, and too bloody impractical. I don't want to spend my life honing my cookware. I want to toss it in the dishwasher and get on with my precious leisure time.

17 cycles still seems pretty slow compared to the methods explored in this article, which got the result down to 0.75ns (~3 cycles?) (for integer strings of a known length): https://kholdstare.github.io/technical/2020&#

Your grandparents aren't going to be running Windows 11 23H2. Hell, I kept my parents on Windows 10 and intend to keep them on it for as long as possible. Too many headaches and calls asking why "things are different now" oth

I've been using VPN services for every byte of traffic in and out of my home and on my mobile phone for 15 years. This sort of thing is why and I will continue to do so. Based on stories I've heard from people work in industry, e

The current government isn't even that right wing. Whole I agree with everything you said, it's actually worse... nobody really believes the next (Labour) government will improve things either.

For a slow protocol like protobufs that is rarely streamed, I agree a length prefix should be the default One way to make streaming work is just to allow the length value to be bigger than needed and add a padding scheme at the end of the m

Pedantry regarding the article: The field prefix byte in Protobuf doesn't really encode "tag and type" as stated in the article, it encodes tag and size (whether the field is fixed 64bit, fixed 32bit, varint, or variable size

Yes, "submessages"in Protobuf have the same field serialisation as strings The field bytes dont really encode tag and type, they encode tag and size (fixed 32bit, 64bit or variable length) Protobuf is a TLV format. In that regar

In my experience most financial firms just use binary floats/doubles Fixed point decimal if you're lucky (or unlucky, since fixed point sucks) Arbitrary precision decimal floating point essentially never used

In my experience unix time in units finer than seconds is more common than not. The NYSE stock exchange uses nanos since Unix epoch as a single 64bit int. I've never seen someone waste a whole second 64bits

Unless you want to keep time to nanosecond granularity, like in a typical modern trading system. Then you have only +/- 292 years.

Right, but pointing people to NaCl which is a proof of concept and not actively maintained (last version 2011) isn't helpful at this point.

This is my experience as well. Everything is expressed as 'number to multiply by to get USD' so USDJPY would always be used in-house inverted. British firm as well. Nobody likes the GBP.

Their IP (proprietary trading algos) etc were probably worth a lot at the time. These days probably not so. I wouldn't imagine there are any market makers left in NYSE and NASDAQ who aren't deploying FPGAs to gain a speed edge.
