I love how Arrington continually says that the email was sent to press@tunecore.com, except that it would be pretty damn rare for a startup to have an actual PR department. And anyway, if a company doesn't want to release information to the

Why is it that every time a political link is posted on here, it gets up-modded like crazy, while at the same time collecting dozens of comments full of meta-discussion about what types of links should and should not be on HN? Seems to me t

Hey, isn't selling ads what Web 2.0 is all about? :)

The only reason I'd leave Google for Facebook is for the options -- if Facebook can wait to implode until after it finds a successful exit at their ridiculous valuation.

Interesting. I hadn't read the background of WFH. I guess in this case we're talking about contract work, because there's no physical office or purchase of equipment (two tests that are typically applied in determining employee vs. contract

IANAL, but it sounds like it's work-for-hire. If you pay someone to do work (particularly by the hour), it's my understanding that they own the intellectual property you generate.

I'll agree that Microsoft hasn't had a stellar record for the past 10 years or so, but this is just ridiculous. + I'll give you MSN search vs. Google, which is of course what the whole Yahoo bid was about. - Hotmail was the first widely-use

Except for the fact that one of Atwood's articles is on Hacker News at least once a week. So, who is submitting these articles? Atwood definitely does write about simple ideas, though. His blog is packaged to be consumed for programmers of

I absolutely was not saying that as a software developer, you need consultants or branded methodologies to tell you how to do your job. Did you read the article? I thought the point of it was that software "methodologies" are essentially ju

Software development processes, as "corporate" as they may appear, are absolutely necessary in any professional development environment. A team, no matter how talented, has to maintain some sort of organization in order to succeed. No offen

To be fair, I hear Google asks similar questions, and I don't think anyone would argue that Google's software is too complex (at least from a user-interface perspective).

I maintain that being able to implement a sorting algorithm from memory is a cheap trick, and has no correlation with programming ability. I've written maybe one sorting routine since leaving college. Being able to pick the correct one for

That's sort of a semantic debate, isn't it? PG might not be a traditional venture capitalist, but nevertheless, he invests money in companies in order to see a return. YC just does it on a much smaller scale than typical VC firms.

Nothing personal, but this is the biggest load of crap I've read for awhile. It's just complete and total FUD. Personal preferences aside, .NET is no different than any Java, Ruby/Rails, or any other programming stack. Programmers typically

True. You have to track your receipts also, and it might even be a good idea to have the corporation "reimburse" you for the computer through company funds. I hear you also have to be very careful with the home office deduction, because it'

As a .NET developer, I can confirm that the grand majority of .NET developers are ignorant of anything that doesn't come from the mouths of Microsoft evangelists. I think the difference is between people who consider themselves "Microsoft d

Wow. Pretty cynical take on American politics. :) Not saying that you're entirely wrong, but every industry has regulatory burdens to deal with. Real estate has their own challenges, including predatory lending laws, etc.

I will never understand why people click topics just to comment on their irrelevancy. You're upset because you think someone is wasting your time, so you...waste your own?

That's one of the hardest things about a startup, if you ask me. I find that brainstorming a little each day helps, and then eventually names will come to you when you're not trying to think of them.

Solve the halting problem. One minor detriment: because it would effectively create an infinite solution in a finite space, the resulting impact on space-time would probably be cataclysmic.

I came into C# by way of C/C++, so I had a slight advantage. That being said, I found the .NET base class library very easy to pick up because of IntelliSense in Visual Studio. You don't really need to know the entire BCL to program in C#,
