In my understanding, the person I was replying to was saying that the actual value of equity isn't relevant, because capital cycles through the economy. I was saying that was absolutely not true, because the only reasons anyone would buy eq

Finance doesn't work that way at all, though. Capital is invested because of the potential of growth, and therefore return. You wouldn't buy stock in a company at $10 if you expected it to be worth $10 for the entire time you held the share

This is the reason I've stopped calling APIs "RESTful". Everyone has a different opinion on where in the "REST spectrum" a given API falls, and in the end, very little of what you described actually impacts whether an API is usable or not.

This is infuriating. Our instances aren't ELB-backed, so we have an entire AZ sitting idle while the rest of our instances are overwhelmed with traffic. Why did they make this decision for us? I'm normally an Amazon apologist when outages

Unless there's an external factor that requires that you complete a task by a certain day, it's much healthier to think of a startup as a marathon than series of sprints.

This is the kind of insightful comment that brings me back to Hacker News. Thank you.

Xamarin is awesome, and what they're doing seems great. They've just entirely shifted their focus to mobile, which makes a lot of sense for them, but doesn't bode well for core Mono and their port of ASP.NET.

You realize you just used the phrase "panty bunching quotient" in a thread about sexism? Not only does this severely undermine your point, it also makes you look surprisingly similar to the so-called confirmed idiots you're describing.

As meanguy pointed out, the Mono team lost Novell's backing -- arguably, they never had it in the first place. Xamarin is now focused entirely on mobile, to the detriment of the core CLR implementation and web. Not that I blame them in the

Trust me when I say that if you use .NET, you're always going to be stuck with Microsoft. Mono, the only other somewhat viable implementation of the CLR, just doesn't really cut it in practice -- at least for ASP.NET.

Probably not -- the 12% fee would severely limit the margin if you tried to trade them.

My Hacker News account is 1859 days old (just over 5 years). Over those 5 years, I've gone through several stages of my entrepreneurial career. HN has been there from the time when I just was dreaming about launching a startup, through the

If you think about it, though, most things are already sold this way. The people who are less engaged are subsidized by those who are more engaged. Mobile phones and broadband internet are good examples.

Just because it's "litre" in the UK and "liter" in the US doesn't make one correct and one incorrect. The latter is the correct spelling in American English.

DR is all about cost, though. It's likely to cost double (or more) to have two (essentially) identical systems in two different cloud providers -- whereas duplicating the same system in two different zones of one provider is nearly free.

The key phrase is "for the installed hardware base," by which I mean the different hardware configurations Windows can support. OSX is the most usable OS hands-down in my estimation, but it can only be used (by non-enthusiasts) on Macs.

It's probably not competition that causes stack ranking to be a bad idea -- it's the measures that determine the ranking. Valve's flat hierarchy probably means that you only need to earn the respect of your peers, not of a group of managers

This is pretty much the norm in large, entrenched companies like Microsoft. It's the reason why so much innovation comes largely from startups and small businesses.

This is just ridiculous. Microsoft is a powerful company that has simply foundered, like many before it. They've just never been able to understand (at a corporate level) the changing forces of the software industry. They remain entrenched
