A HVDC belt buckle around the earth paired with oodles of PV seems like a rare legit silver bullet. Hopefully China is wildly successful with this, spurring further investment.

Maybe make some videos or something. My tiny California trash can is full to the brim every week, not for lack of trying. I’m fairly sure I’m in the top 10% of giving a f in my country. Culture has huge impact so I don’t want to discourage

Still the all time cheesiest language switch. Banderas sits up all night listening to them speak in another language. By morning they’re all speaking English. When he speaks to them fluently, they’re surprised and ask how he learned their l

I’m currently in the process of converting a no code product to “pro code“ per their definition, and I agree with their intentions here. Many of these efforts in the past (including the team I’m on) lump opinionated libraries in with what I

Anecdotally, Irish sausages are the world's best hangover cure (pig fat). Spent a year in Galway in college. The first time I tried an Irish sausage, it made my stomach turn. Tried them again with a hangover and it was like angels were

Just finished Diaspora. It made me feel rather stupid, as the analogies it weaves throughout (as way to dumb it down I suppose) were sort of like reading the cliff notes. Okay 6 dimensions, ok 12 sure. And this one is 5 dimensions but they’

It seems like we have endless ways to store energy at grid scale but we don't employ them because coal/natural gas is "cheaper" than storage, and likely will be until an industry for grid-scale storage starts grinding do

For bugfixes, I just write a failing test. For features, I need to take the time to think of required behavior. If I just focus on the implementation, the tests add no documentation and I'm not forced through the exercise of thinking a

If it can cause a regression, it's not internal. My rule of thumb is "test for regression directly", meaning a good test is one that only breaks if there's a real regression. I should only ever be changing my unit tests

The gnawing, intractable loss of genetic diversity in a spaceship ecosystem made for an interesting conflict source. Reading Diaspora right now from a rec on hn and just loving the intentional handling of conflict in that as well.

Just looking at the numbers, the damage from Harvey (which they call small/lucky) was something like 6x the cost of the cheaper "artificial island" option proposed. The arguments for UBI have the implication that we have too
