The salaries are only high in the US though, but the recession is global.

Since the choice is often restricted for these options, I usually choose Doctors Without Borders since at least they're actually out there doing stuff on the ground. Otherwise the FSFE when it's an option in Europe since their Pub

And yet a lot of so-called "progressive" countries (e.g. Sweden and Germany) punish child-free workers with extremely high income tax to give handouts to parents (Barnbidrag + Kindergeld). It's not even means-tested so they&#

Strange that it proposes buying "climate-friendly" stuff at the end - the best approach is to not buy new things at all, and focus on reducing electronics waste, planned obsolescence, etc. - where FOSS can have a critical role. Th

But almost no-one is earning $250k/year in Europe. Not even the Prime Minister. That's the issue, it's more like earning $60k in EU vs. $160k in the US for most Tech workers. And the latter is much, much better.

I just stopped reading news completely, and deleted Twitter. And try to only read technical subreddits. It's a whole lot better - using the time to exercise or program instead of just doom-scrolling for stuff we can't change anywa

We need more democracy - pan-EU elections for the President, pan-EU parties for the Parliament, etc.

The US will make money from it - with the lend lease and LNG exports. The EU only stands to lose money with a new refugee crisis and increased defence spending.

That's like arguing the Supreme Court or the Federal Reserve is elected, since eventually their appointing bodies are - somewhere down the line.

I think it's time to ignore climate concerns for now. Otherwise autocracies and selfish governments have a massive advantage - e.g. the US pulling out of the Paris accord, Russia, etc. At this rate the economy might collapse this time

Just as I predicted in the 2022 predictions thread - https://news.ycombinator.com/context?id=29746942 It sucks as a Europoor. Visiting NY/WA for work when our salary as a senior engineer is like $70k, and the Americans

There's a load of countries that don't qualify for the ESTA though. It's stopped us having conferences in the US because non-EU nationals working in Europe can't get US tourist visas in time.

Nah, I worked at Amazon in Europe - earned about $75k for a position that pays $160k in the US. We europoors are cheap labour for US corporations.

A more practical solution is housing coops like the BRF system in Sweden. Individual landlordism is mostly banned (there are some company rentals though) - you buy the place you live in, and there are restrictions on renting it out (no more
