[Sorry for the self plug, but this is too cool to pass up] 435 days ago I first publicly "launched" KalSMS in an HN thread - http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1759871 - the codebase was later picked up by Envaya, greatly improved and mo

That's true - but admittedly I'm a complete idiot as far as investing is concerned.. If you have any recommendations for good intro texts, I'd love to hear.

Please don't take my comment as criticism - I used to do the same when I started out, and it was a lot of fun. Definitely an experience worth going through. I was just referring to the longer term, so that people new to this field won't get

That half-arsed stuff in the middle is called living, and it's the only way you can do this sustainably. Startups are like going to Hollywood. Your goal might be to become as successful as Clooney, but that's not likely to work out. Still,

There's really almost no such thing as talent acquisition , IMHO: 1. No dev is worth $1m. Their skills may generate as much and more, but only in a specific context . Being great at catching a football is worth $50m in context of the NFL,

I think TV journalism isn't American media's stronger suite, but you could fairly say that globally Fox News is the rule rather than the exception.

I'm not an American. I've only been living in the US for the a few years. Of course there's some poor reporting in the US, like anywhere else. I don't know of any European/Asian newspaper that does a better job than the NY Times or WaPo (or

I think it's very wrong for banks to disallow money transfers to WikiLeaks, and I think Americans are often naive but "Americans are the most naive consumers of commercial news on the planet" is highly exaggerated.

As usual in Globalpost, attributing to malice what can be easily explained by stupidity. CEOs make dumb decisions every day without being anyone's mole.

The funny thing is that the supposedly mature "we're a public, billion dollar grown up corporation now" approach almost always ends up robbing the company of its ability to lead and innovate. Google is neglecting products it's great at (eg

That's the story of the Mac floppy, the article refers to the Apple II one. If by "didn't do shit" you mean he didn't actually hold the soldering iron, you're missing a lot.

Technologies might "need to die" on blogs, but in the real world they get replaced with better alternatives - once these emerge. Want to replace PHP with your favorite solution X? Write a better Wordpress, Drupal, vBulletin or even PhpMySQL

I think it's fair to say 3 months after Oct 2008 investment really did dry up. You'll always find some exceptions, since VCs dont disappear off the earth in a recession, but it is much harder to get financed.

It's funny this is what causes people to question AJ credibility. Merely being based in a Monarchy and financed by the ruling family wasn't some cause for concern, you think? (BBC comparisons commence in 1..) This is not to say AJ should be

I remember this story from another angle - when Reddit was a few years old you'd see stories claiming his presence, an Israel ex-commando, on the plane "proves" that Israel was behind 9/11. Nutty, but these submissions were doing pretty wel

I think Google just doesn't really get how unique GAE was. It was a fantastic platform for small apps, and inevitable some percentage of these would grow to big, paying apps. Also (sorry for the armchair quarterbacking here, can't resist..)

Very disappointing. GAE for a while was for developers what Tumblr/WP.com/etc are for writers, a way to put an idea online cheaply & easily. The generous quotas made using the proprietary APIs worth it. Now it's just another PaaS. Seems

The fact it has users actually makes it a negative-revenue company, since every message the users send costs GroupMe money. At 100M msg/mo, that's probably a bit more expensive than keeping some servers running.

There isn't rational thinking behind this. There's a lot of money and a growing fear of becoming irrelevant. The people running a company like Google don't necessarily have wisdom you don't - see Microsoft, Yahoo! or (especially after disma

Basically just code that parses the tumblr markup (more or less..) and then enters the various RSS data for the relevant vars. No XSLT involved, though perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea..
