I'm Israeli. I did expect it to be high on the list, but that gap between it and 2nd place is quite surprising... I can think of a few reasons: 1. Israel is in a way similar to a big city - a small place and tightly knit. It's a young natio

That's the thing - the choice isn't between languages, but between tools. For example, having a lot of libraries is not strictly a language feature, but it does effect choosing one over the other. On its own, as a language, PHP doesn't have

Also, very good user-annotated documentation (I don't know if this is still so, but it was when I started PHP) and a lot of existing code/libraries/applications (of varying quality) that you can use. The value of PHP is not in the language

Didn't get the "semantic web" part - isn't what the article describes simply keyword-sensitive ads?

Isn't the C extension issue the same for other languages, eg Python or PHP? (I really don't know, I'm not that familiar with Ruby internals) I think this issue, like Capistrano's, would benefit from having more Ruby coders, which in itself

I think this is related to Ruby in the sense that there aren't that many Ruby coders. The whole "scratch an itch" thing is a numbers game - maybe %1 of the people who have a problem would actually contribute a patch that fixes it, so the mo

You know, not to flame, but this attitude is exactly why Ruby isn't where it could be. I love Ruby, do most of my work in it now and haven't owned a Windows machine since 2001, but if Ruby's answer to Windows users is "just switch to Ubuntu

This is not just strained, but wrong. From Emacs (read all the document into memory) to Linux (ignore pre-386 processors, majority at the time) to Java (drop C memory handling requirements) and of course any web app that runs on a dynamic l

I think this relates to a recent discussion here about Customer Development as something that should be done from the very early stages, closely tied to the product development effort. ( http://startuplessonslearned.blogspot.com/2008/11/w

I don't think people who choose not to have kids are immature, it's a legitimate choice. I just mention it as a measure of certain changes. Nothing necessarily bad or good about it.

The 3 stage process of childhood - adolescence - adulthood is already irrelevant in many affluent Western countries, but what was removed isn't adolescence but adulthood. Many 40 year olds manage their lives as teenagers (look at the low bi

Absolutely - I'm feeling the same, like we're seeing the Apple II of a new industry. That's why I posted this question, I'm curious to hear what kind of directions people have in mind for these machines.

Find a niche which is new - so no one has years of experience doing it - and appealing enough that there's a strong demand for skilled coders. Right now, iPhone and Android are two examples of such fields, there's probably some more. Build
