In that case, any coverage of Twitter in the media is positive almost by definition?

This article seems kind of strange, talking of "Twitter haters" and "this loathing of all things Twitter", and what "The media wants you to believe". IMHO Twitter is getting an amazingly positive treatment from the media. Anyone following t

It's not exactly enterprise material, since AFAIK it only works when your laptop is on, but it's nice if you have a few non-critical sites you want to keep an eye on.

Yes, but how do you judge if it has value? It seems that, as in the dot.com era, it's still not judged by income, but by number of users (or just level of hype - Twitter only has ~6 million users). Current technology does make this valid in

Favorite quote: "Sanford Bernstein’s bearish approach is based on its belief the Web 2.0 model of building something and then figuring out a way to make money is no longer valid." IIRC, that was supposed to be our lesson from the dot.com bu

But isn't it trivial for Facebook to offer Twitter's functionality (or do they already? Not an FB user ;)) and instantly have about x30 (AFAIK) larger userbase?

I've never used either product, it does seem like an application where customers would be willing to pay to get better accuracy, especially business clients. Obviously, Google might improve their solution and offer similar quality for free.

When I was reading this part in the Black Swan I realize how fortunate we are to work in software. It's one of very few fields where you can make a decent non-scalable income while at the same time (sometimes via the same actual product) be

Yeah, but there's a distinct difference between the way this is handled in HN and the automatic "Beh, PHP!" in Reddit.

One of the symptoms of Reddit's takeover by the same kind of idiots that comment on YouTube was the knee jerk downmod of any non-derisive mention of PHP. I hope the fact the parent comment is downmodded so quickly doesn't mean those people

"new kind of journalism"? Seems to me about 5 paragraphs of the story are basically an ad for the hotel he stayed in. Adding "full disclosure" does not turn this type of writing into journalism (not a new kind, anyway).

Collapse of Techcrunch and Valleywag might end the "Web 2.0" hype era. Web 2.0 itself won't end, because it never existed - you can't really find anything "web 2.0" that isn't just evolution or wider distribution of concepts from "Web 1.0".

Keep in mind these are the authors' impressions from talking to VCs, who traditionally (and perhaps by definition) are at least one beat behind what's really going on.

How's the Berlin startup scene these days? I visited the place around 2005 - it was a great city and had thriving culture, but seemed to be lagging behind Hamburg or Munich as far as startups. Has it changed since?

I think at some point people will realize this is not counter intuitive, but actually a logical conclusion - if you raise $10m to build what another company produced for $15k, you're setting yourself to fail. You have VCs or other investors
