I was thinking more as a web service, so JSONP is for cross site XHR. I assume someone would not have a good NL date parser for their environment, or won't be able to run it for some reason, or would simply prefer Chronic. A lot of stuff th

Nothing wrong with that. Can be useful for non-Ruby apps, for example. BTW. A JSONP version could make usable from JavaScript..

Absolutely. The thing is, if the system rewards frequent posting, by definition this harms the average post quality. (In fairness, I think the same is true for blogs etc. I used to think RSS readers could fix this, but Twitter is basically

A few months ago, I create 2 Twitter feeds: http://twitter.com/applelinks and http://twitter.com/applestuff Each of these based on an RSS mix of the same 8 or so Apple-centered websites. @applelinks tries to filter them for quality, by

That's my point - some people got high karma by posting intelligent comments, but many others just got it by posting a lot and echoing popular views. So, karma score in itself is pretty useless, in my opinion.

The whole idea of "Karma" is silly. It encourages conforming to majority views and rewards people who are talkative rather than insightful - often mutually exclusive groups, since insight is gained by thinking & doing rather than postin

Wired isn't ambiguous in the way it chooses to package this article: a title like "Why Craigslist Is Such a Mess" and an "Extreme Makeover" section showing how it should look like (at least one of the suggestions resides firmly in Designe

The thing is, people aren't pissed off. People made Craigslist a huge success. This article is like these "I've been doing LAMP for 2 years now. So, here's what Google should do.." blog posts, except that Wired doesn't have the excuse of be

Great submission. Pretty relevant to Hacker News, since writers and startups work in the similar high odds environment (like NNT's "Extremistan"). Circumstance, timing and luck have at least as much influence on the ultimate result as merit

So, to summarize, it's useful for people building certain projects with PHP and at the same time a great boon for people making sarcastic comments about PHP. Win win.

Making money depends on a lot of variables beyond your control. Making art is completely within your control. Every 5 year old does art, very few people make real money. In any case, if money is your goal (absolutely legitimate) you'll have

Are people here really taking this seriously? You believe Sir Richard will read your tweet and make you a millionaire? The combination of Branson + Twitter + Fast Company should be overloading your hype detectors. Come on.

Bit.ly offers this functionality, for free. I think bit.ly are the only ones that have a chance of making real money. Their model is: 1. Build a very good URL shortening service 2. Have a close relationship with Twitter, get them to choose

If it is a PR stunt, it's pretty crass. But I doubt it's PR - they don't make any money on links, so a hike in traffic just means more costs. Considering that they did intend to keep the old URLs functioning, and that users can get the same

When they got into the business, Twitter wasn't such a big deal, though. (Personally I believe Twitter will go back to not being a big deal in a few years, but so would URL shortening in general)

Why not just put a URL shortener on the SMS interface, where it doesn't matter much if the shortener service dies anyway, and leave the original URL on the web interface.

The Apple/Microsoft comparison ignores the fact that MS has a huge market share which, until the recent switch in user focus from desktop to web apps, had few viable alternatives. This is far from the case with Apple. Avoiding Windows ca. 1

A little trick from FLOSS Podcast's session with John Resig: instead of serving jQuery from your domain, use the Google hosted one: http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.3/jquery.min.j... - you get to benefit from Google's CDN, an
