Seems to me the number of people using RSS readers isn't even that important - RSS is infrastructure, most of its users aren't even aware of it (eg, various "latest stories at.." widgets). The annual "RSS Is Dead" posts would be meaningful

That's right. If they can hype Facebook enough, Goldman will cover their investment easily. It's less about what Facebook turns out to be actually worth in the long term than what GS can help make people believe it's worth in the near term.

Some of the most murderous dictators in recent century were celebrated by Western intellectuals - Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao. There's nothing about being an "intellectual", whatever this means, that makes you a better judge of reality.
