x^4 + y^4 = z^4 is itself a great example of this. In C, we can just specify any pair from x,y,z and the third is determined by rearranging. In R, it's not true! (y=2 and z=1 runs into trouble.) However, there are still infinitely many

Same! Started with Squid and Spotify took me to Black Midi, Yard Act, Dry Cleaning, all of whom I'd skipped in the past because I just didn't get it, now I'm obsessed. Some music just defies understanding on a first lesson.

I think the parent comment is saying the people who wrote the study criticizing online toys sales would benefit from damaging the reputation of online toys sales. This makes it more likely the study doesn't really make sense, and just

Telling people to relax is pretty much an ad hominem. Just because I'm disappointed and voice my criticism doesn't mean I'm being hysterical. It's art, I have opinions: season 8 was absolutely dreadful and cyberpunk is n

For Vue, Nuxt recently got a content API which I've been using and it is great. If there really isn't an equivalent for React I'd be very surprised.

What are the problems you've had? I'm about to switch to KaTeX for speed which will take quite a bit of work and this got me spooked.

I would love to know the answer to your question. On the one hand, it's too subjective to answer, one student's Spivak is another's Apostol; on the other hand, certain books just seem special in an almost objective way and ri

For my own part, it was all about finding the right book. I enjoyed my degree in pure maths, and after finishing I really missed studying so I tried out dozens of books. Eventually, I hit upon Calculus by Spivak. This book fundamentally cha

As a person walking away from us gradually escapes our senses, a person slipping into dementia gradually escapes the ability of our social apparatus to comprehend them as a person. To the observer, they both disappear, but they continue to

I don't think it's fair to victims of abusive relationships for you to use this analogy: the truth is far darker and more complex, and survivors deserve more credit than you're giving them. I could give you my story as an exa

I think a lot of people fantasise about a better, more open Medium, and I'm surprised it doesn't exist. Github does a fantastic job of hosting code and keeping people happy (generally). It's generous to individuals and has a

Serious question, are you not also concerned about the poor quality of worker you might take on with a less rigorous process? I think I'd accept a few false negatives to avoid the hassle of false positives (in the UK at least, where em

It's funny how couples' attitudes to idleness can conflict like this. I spent a good few years at the beginning of my relationship with my now wife defending my right to not appear to be doing anything. It took a long time for us
