"All too often a single HTTP request will have 4 or 5 database queries in it, and that is regarded as normal." Is this really normal for a Java app? A typical Rails app (either built by myself or someone else) would have tens of queries in

I get an error message (from the actual app, http://browserling.com/ ) - "No API resources availble for null group" (seems to be no matter which Browser/Version or URL I choose). I'm using Chrome, as requested.

We make MinuteDock ( http://minutedock.com ). More of a standard time-tracking program than a clock-card machine, but serves the same purpose </shamelessplug> ;)

The API documentation is probably not where you want to look in this instance. It's more intended for looking up the behaviour or options for a specific method call. http://guides.rubyonrails.org is the equivalent of the Python documentat

Interesting points, and some food for thought. Thanks for that. I'm not sure it's a "winner take all" market - there's no real "social"/"viral" aspect, just the usual "word-of-mouth" that people aim for. We have no money (don't need it), no

This means I'd end up with 5% of the company (if I'm lucky) according to most of what I've read (could be wrong, of course). The theory over there seems to be that the founders keep as much of the equity as possible, and pass it out the 1st

Try getting a refund when their crappy plugin crashes your browser... How about the printed copy that's now unusable (because it's, you know, paper, and paper has a habit of getting crumpled or ripped or wet or binned...) Even iTunes doesn'

We do the same thing, with a simple label system ("Follow Up", "Request for Feature X", "Request for Feature Y") to give us a little more overview visibility. I'd certainly recommend this approach, especially if your workflow is well define

I'd second this. We've been using GRaphael for the reporting graphs on MinuteDock, and we had to manually hack in a bunch of things - like rotating the labels on the x-axis correctly if they were too long, and even drawing both axes on some

Seems like there is a program called "fortune" that prints a random "fortune" on boot. And some joker took it upon themselves to add a somewhat distressing boot message into the default list. (man fortune: http://linux.die.net/man/6/fortun

whereabouts in New Zealand are you? In Wellington there's been a pretty successful "Summer of Code" program run for the past few years, placing interns with startups (nothing to do with Google). I've been part of it both as a student and la

What advantages would a "mix'n'match" approach like this have over something unified like Prototype (which, as far as I can tell, includes implementations of all the parts you are using)? I have found Prototype much better for a "web-app" f

Hmmm, we're trying to figure out some sort of demo. It's hard to jig up with the way Xero does OAuth (they only allow access tokens that last for 30 minutes. Twitter's access tokens last forever. They assure me they are working on it though

I think you need to be particularly careful when approaching a technical audience (like HN) for something like this. I'm not saying that I feel this attitude in particular from you, but posts of the "I'm the business guy, I need a tech guy"

It's the "Disputes Tribunal". So it's not a proper "Court" per se - you present your case to a mediator, in person. http://www.justice.govt.nz/disputes/about/default.asp for more information.
