This has one disadvantage: You will be working with people who don't want to work, do everything to waste your and their time and will drag you down. If you are fine with that everything is good, but if you have at least a bit of drive

We were running our core routers with BGP and VPP for several years pushing around 40-50 Gbps on a software stack without the need of those expensive ASICs. Worked great and stable. VPP is a great piece of technology.

ECC RAM has its advantages but I agree it's not a must have for workstations. DDR5 has on-die ECC, which is basically controlled by the RAM itself and not everything around it like with regular ECC.

S3 and R2 aside, OVHs object storage offering is really robust and great. It performs better than S3 and is way cheaper, in storage and egress cost.

Even the high profile datacenters I had to deal with in Frankfurt had the same issues. There were regular maintenance tests where they made sure the generators were working properly... I can imagine this is more of a pray and sweat task tha
