Japan is a very complex place, which is why it's so annoying when people like Iyer reduce it to window dressing, or when you reduce it to some dystopian Japan Times 過労死 click bait headline. Edit: In case my point wasn't clear, I&#

I live in Japan and have a Finnish friend. We talk plenty, but I think we'd both be perfectly fine saying nothing when there's nothing to say. There's lots of small talk in Japan, but a lot of it is pre-scripted by convention

Am I the only person who sees this as good news? There is a lot to learn from old people, and seniors often need the help at home.

These kinds of filters have been available in Asian apps like B612 and Snow for a while. No one I know in Japan has ever even spoken of Snap, let alone used it. And this is in the land of selfies and purikura.

Have you been to Japan? Land shortage isn't a major issue outside Tokyo. In fact, large areas of Japan are primarily farmland. The cities also have amazingly high population densities, and it is common to find vegetable patches and fru

It may have little to do with policy-making and is surely anecdotal, but Japanese produce is far better and cheaper than what I used to get in America. (And the same is true of meat and baked goods.) The difference is plainly obvious. The i

Apple has weathered, and thrived during, much worse "backlashes" than the current one, which is itself lacking any evidence of being a real thing in terms of Apple's bottom line. AAPL is up over 50% since I bought it last ye

Positive sentiment is often an excellent signal that the emperor has no clothes. Most people will ignore what they can see with their own eyes if everyone around them seems to see something different.

Indeed. Note that Netflix has never offered a filter by rating, or the ability to hide already-watched or disliked content.

Except instead of adopting Japan's proven policies and tech in this area, America has to reinvent the wheel. The whole blueprint is there in Japan, from the legal to the infrastructure to the ops. It's not some megalomaniac moonsh

Thank you, too, for a civilized back-and-forth. In the end, we all carry the perspective of whatever personal gauntlet we've run. To say that one man's trash is another man's treasure is not much a condemnation of garbage lov

"The best revenge is living well" is a well-known expression in English. I don't literally need to exact any revenge. If you want to dwell on shortcomings, that's what you'll do.

I'll indulge your request but I doubt it matters. My experience is mine and yours is different. The point I make above is that the relentless doomsaying about Japan is totally outside my experience and has no reality in my daily life.

There is such a huge gap between your incredibly bleak image of Japan and the lively, optimistic and impressive Japan that I live in. I've lost count of the number of gaijin experts on Japan who want to tell me about how wrecked Japan

If you see iPads as a hindrance to education, you are a terrible teacher. If I had been given access to an iPad at age 10, I would have been completely, endlessly obsessed with the possibilities of it. As it was, I had access to a TRS80 at

Since you said "society", it's worth noting that Snap is really not a player in Asia. In Japan and Korea, Line is dominant. In China, there is doubtless something else to take its place.

Also, every time Netflix releases an app on a new platform, their UI gets collectively slightly worse on all platforms. It's probably the sheer burden of building and supporting and synchronizing so many client apps.
