You may want to open it up with a phillips head jewelery screwdriver (they don't have the lockout screws) and clean the scum off of the pads and button areas. If the rubber pads are still springy, then you are in good shape. I can tell

Microsoft as a UI company historically has been absolutely god awful: Probably one of the main reasons Apple stayed in business before the iPhone. I wouldn't expect them to wake up one day and start making clean UIs.

As a related anecdote, you NEVER want to put whitespace in filepaths. Ever. Tons of programs will just break, even in 2023, even Microsoft ones (looking at you Powershell), and i'd imagine forevermore. Your life will end up as a series
