You'll get the sense of scale in VR, but I don't think you can get the realization that below you would be billions of people walking and bustling around you cannot even sense. The feeling of being so zoomed out and everything fee

Not as much as risk. More of not wanting to be seen as a monopoly. Giving up 1% of the browser market share and a few pennies is worth it to not be seen as the virtual dictator of the Web.

I think there's not much pressure to get at it when they have hundreds of millions in the bank and have been funded externally their whole life. I believe those backfired since all their marketing has been propped on morality. When the

Does the defense contractor rag on the military afterwards? You can take money from something, use it for good, but it's kinda funny when you start to claim the hands that feeds you is evil and bad.

Kind of funny though, the vast majority of Mozilla's money comes from the ads and tracking industry, just one step removed.

Those are terrible, but realize that the only news that makes it out from China to the US are the negative, and heavily paints China as evil. Everyone I talk to have never been to China, yet think everyone there is brainwashed. People reali

Yup, they've set it up so money can flow within their own system and their own economy can prosper, rather than money feeding out to Google or Facebook. Quality of life in China has exploded massively, and things like restaurant prices

It's my favorite place to be. Reject organic food and unique flavors for dirt cheap. Wine at marked off prices with an annual 20% blanket wine sale. There are some things that act as dinners for me for $0.50.

Honestly, I think most American media has it out for China. Which results in the people having it out for China. Which results in like Redditors spamming Tiananmen Square on any thread involving China or even things like Epic Games who mere

Those thoughts are valid, but that's not what i see online. See Reddit now about Tencent's investment. That's the sort of thing. Western media is more apt to upvoting and exposing anti-China stuff whenever it happens, no matt

Any post supporting or defending China in any way is definitely an exception. I'm surprised to see any "China #1" posts anywhere. Anti-China sentiments are universal on HN and Reddit if you search any thread mentioning China.

Wechat is pretty good if you're in China. You can use it to do everything (payments, taxi, tickets, transfer, calls, games) versus having tons of miscellaneous poor apps. Every store and even panhandlers accept Wechat. I'm in the

I don't think this is true. I've been using Wechat from US. I can see all the people's moments in China and in some groups fine. All the services I've tried so far have worked okay.

Honestly, I think it’s a monoculture already and the fact that multiple engines exist puts up an illusion of competition. Google controls where the Web goes today, and that there is an oligopoly is a false symbol. At least Chrome gets more
