Lentils aren't magic, there's plenty of foods like this -- pasta, rice and beans, oatmeal. Most of them are sold at convenience stores in urban areas.

Maximizing calorie per dollar almost certainly means boxes of pasta, jars of peanut butter, and bags of rice and beans. I think comfort, habit, and convenience have more to do with it than calories.

Here's the rub: it's much easier to overeat with carbs and sugar than with protein, fiber and fat. A lot of people wouldn't blink at 80g of carbs from fries or desert but eating four apples in one sitting is much more difficu

I don't understand why we are talking about this. Google is far from the first "monopoly" that I would like to see broken up. My guess is that Google's not lobbying effectively.

That's not what Palantir Gotham does. It's much closer to a sophisticated database and Tableau than some sort of big-brother invasive nightmare.

Not any more than it should be shocking to a forum of computer scientists that police agencies have tools to query a database and produce visualizations.

I think this is a good analog for what Palantir does, actually. The thing to note is that Palantir is not in the data collection industry, or even the data storage industry. They are in the data analysis industry. One way or another Califor

I agree that the reporting is sub-par but that's not really what's going on. Insulin R and rapid-acting insulin are two separate medications. All insulin manufacturers produce both types and a generic is only available for NPH, de

Alternatively, it's like calling Disneyworld a city. Lots of people there during the day, lots of people staying overnight, but not many people truly living there.

Venice's problem seems obvious to me -- there are no roads. And you can't bike or use a scooter since the alleyways are narrow, zig-zagging, and full of stairs. The only modes of transportation are to walk or to take the ferry to

Why provide a layer of indirection between the developer and the DOM? I already know HTML elements and the DOM API, why should I want to learn a hole new framework to construct them?

That's quite hyperbolic. Functional components have existed in React for a long time, hooks are just adding existing concepts (state and lifecycle operations) to them.
