This post deserved so many more upvotes! Fantastic summary, and explained lots of things I didn't quite get really well. Bookmarked.

That's not TDD. You define the expected behaviour first (which still can be wrong, now or in the future - they're based on your current assumptions/spec/other mutable thing), then ensure the code produces output that matches your expectatio

This is something I've experienced first-hand, and an extremely valuable lesson for people thinking about starting a startup. At a low average monthly cost (say less than $30), it's really damn hard to get enough people into your funnel f

A previous tool for the same class of exploits (Firewire DMA): http://web.archive.org/web/20100510013948/http://www.storm.n... Were these kinds of exploits noted when writing the 1394 spec and ignored in favour of the DMA feature?

Is there a consulting market for fixing these kinds of examples? I quite enjoy optimizing these kinds of issues, but perhaps the value is too implicit or too low for them to bother.

Yeah, the 'Add comment' link is pretty confusing. I'd consider moving the '1 comment' text below the comment box, and display the truncated comment text instead. It felt very much like the comment I'd entered had just disappeared with the c

How can they drop their prices by 30% and still make anything? I was under the impression that the margins for S3 and Cloud Storage weren't that high.

In theory, yes, but if you have a profitable business with a 1% margin by definition it already has to be absolutely giant (e.g. Amazon) to be making money. And to reduce costs at this scale is harder than increasing sales.

The problem is that reducing costs doesn't typically scale. If you want to grow a businesses profit significantly, you need to increase sales. It's entirely reasonable to double your sales. It's pretty difficult to halve your costs.

I don't think any of the major web browsers do semantic versioning. Mozilla doesn't increase the major version number for every patch either - they increase it for every scheduled release (ie every 6 weeks). Patch releases (typically securi
