Check out the street performer protocol: http://www.schneier.com/paper-street-performer.html I also heard of some companies trying to apply this to specific cases.

What makes you think that a person planning on living for 1000 years would go retire for 90% of their life? What makes you think that a person who lives from paycheck to paycheck would be able to afford anti-aging treatments which are likel

Better medical technology = an accident that is fatal now may not be fatal a hundred years into the future. All these studies are complete bullshit because none of them can predict the social factor and over a period as long as 2500 years,

Doubt it. Population control laws are too unpopular and anybody over ~300 is probably very rich thanks if nothing else, due to the magic of compound interest. Since rich = powerful, it is unlikely that any population control measure would h

One question: If they are using 80386 memory segments, how do they cope with systems like AMD64 and the linux kernel both of which have flat memory systems? Besides, normal desktop OSes already isolate programs in their own memory segments.

Just more proof that humanity is not destined for a malthusian end and that doomsday predictions based on lack of resources are misguided. People who claim that human needs grow exponentially and thus must eventually go unsatisfied fail to

Agreed. On my gentoo systems, I just compile emcs without X support. Makes life easy. Also, one critical skill when using emacs is learning to modify the .emacs.el file as time goes on. Over the years, the little things I accumulated in thi

That is the problem. One of the central tenants of relativity is that what reference frames we choose is irrelevant as long as we account for all the relativistic effects. In you analysis, whatever that may be, you have two twins which sepa

There is a problem with your analysis. Switch viewpoints to the reference frame of the traveling twin. In that case, that twin stays in a constant position and the other twin travels with a trajectory of x(t) = -0.9 c sin(kt) / k. The negat

So... anybody hear Cisco's side of this story yet? Apparently, they weren't quite denying access to the source code outright but placed it on their website (where 1 hn commenter managed to find it, presumably, not after that much time). Wha

The twin paradox cannot be handled by SR. The difference in aging comes about due to time dialation caused by the differential acceleration that the twins experience (the twin in the spaceship is accelerated and the other is not). SR can b

Yes it does. It has at least 4 different ways to loop, 4 different types of arguments to functions, 5 or 6 different lets (functions, macros, let* , normal let, ...), 3 or 4 different kinds of variables (with no unifying underlying theme),

So... Special relativity is called "special" because it specifically assumes no acceleration and therefore, no force. That formula you have is an approximation for "small" forces. General relativity is what actually explains space with ac
