I've incurred $30 since the switch for my website. At about $10 a day, I'd have to pay at least $100 a month (after their $200) discount. By contrast, I pay $170 for my server. I looked at available options, and have been hesitant

Someone pointed out that the 2 generals problem wasn't stated correctly on the post, the Wikipedia article invalidates my thinking entirely [0]. So, I agree re. strong consistency; as the problem was about that, and not eventual consis

I had a similar comment re. eventual consistency; and I think this is a case of eventual consistency. I think it doesn't work because the problem becomes "when to retreat". It actually introduces a third state (attack; retrea

Then the network isn't lossy, but it's droppy. If all messages are dropped, one of the conditions of the theorem are invalidated; then it becomes a different problem.

Given the Two Generals problem, I wanted to frame "eventual consistency" as the below, (but it doesn't work): Alice sends a message saying "Attack on XX:XX on the nth day", and sends that message each day, with nth

Interesting that you talk about Java Spring, because I was partly lambasted for not using a Java framework. I thought Spring is good. What's wrong with it?

The middleway is not the problem. As you mention about the strawmannery; the problem is that often the "tried and tested" people are resistant to trying something else. On the other extreme, the "React, SPA, SSR" people

Dremio quickly becomes useless with MongoDB given that for a while it's not been possible to join data from two MongoDB collections by their object IDs. Last time I checked, Dremio mangled the id into some string that can't even b

This has been a great and informative write-up. I learnt of Arrow when Wes and Hadley announced Feather. I think Arrow was still 0.4.0 At the end of 2016, we had a project at work where we were trying to migrate a credit modeling architectu

I think proactivity and a knowing a good platform to ask questions in, helps. For some of us, the difficulty is often whether to ask on StackOverflow or to open a bug on Github. An overflow of Github issues can lead to some issues going unn

It was less about JSON, but more about reducing the number of libraries that I had to learn in one go. The benefit of using protobufs/gRPC was that I already had a host of microservices that I could choose to interact with. I'll n

My Go is very basic, but I can follow up with a Go impl and compare it with Rust. The code shouldn't take an experienced Go programmer more than an hour, as it's mainly mapping gRPC calls to Redis calls.

Do you have a brief example, or is it the normal "I am a str".to_string()? I still have a long way to go with learning how Rust works. I've heard about zero-copy in C and C++, but don't have an idea of how it's impl

From looking at the traces, the performance difference between the two is minimal (on a per op basis). This mainly because both the Java and Rust services don't do much beyond interfacing with Redis/Tile38. The impressive and impo

Flutter is good, I echo the author's sentiments. I wrote a Flutter app for Android in a very short period, relative to my Android Java attempt. The use of widgets saves a lot of time, leaving one to focus on connecting everything toget

Many things are worth investing in, if you justify it. The case between Rust and Go is an interesting one, as many of us have observed that the two languages seem to get paired together (for people wanting to learn). I wanted to start learn
