Is it really necessary to hear a counterpoint? The debate has mostly been around whether or not it is a viable business model, not whether or not it is always the best business model.

It depends on your definition of freemium & your definition of user, I suppose. The 95/5 is Chris Anderson's guess/recommendation, not mine. But I'm sure you can find examples at all ratios. I'll look at what I use. Both Weebly & Dr

Interesting Point: We lost the ability to effectively use CPC search marketing (google). When we had a free trial, it was easy to see which clicks were worth paying for. But with freemium, the conversion funnel was so long (average of near

IMO, there are two big reasons for freemium. - To create a large community with network effects that increase the overall value. Here it's hard to charge anything at all, especially if you have any kind of competition. Once you have lots of

Is it actually illegal or just a violation of their contact with dealerships? I understand that legacy agreements with dealerships are a contributor to The Failure as are (we keep hearing) legacy agreements with unions. But overall I think

Release an OS that will send more people to the internet, where your (profitable) search engine is.

A $0.99/month is almost as much of a problem. Most times that I hit NYT it's because of a link here or on a blog or someone emails it to me. That amounts to probably 1-2 per week. That disappears with a paywall.

The problem is not the look of the site. At least I don't think it is. The problem is that is Mum checks facebook once a week, 19 year old daughter doesn't want to post drunk pictures of herself making stupid sexy faces at last night's part

I agree partially. So long as the word means 'that thing VCs won't invest in,' it's demeaning. But lifestyle business is inherently demeaning. It implies a goal of cutting back on stress, hard work, long hours etc. A retirement business. A

I disagree. If that were the case prices would have gone down, not up. Since netbooks surfaced there has been feature creep and price creep.

It still sounds pretty far removed. Release an OS that will drive traffic to your spreadsheet app that will drive traffic to your search engine where you can sell ads. *Gmail still doesn't really makes much money.

On the same note, without Open Source, netbooks may never have gotten a start. Microsoft could have charged a prohibitive license fee to sell $350 laptops. They could have refused to continue XP. Windows 7 for netbooks would never have been

That is my point. For the theoretical $200 impulse buy EeePc, that $50 would have been a deal breaker. Armchair strategising would have led you to that conclusion. An OS that lowered costs by that much would have been an obvious choice. Tha

I think at this point it's semantics. 'What do you mean broken?' I would classify your above comment as an explanation of how & why the model is problematic. I actually do agree that it's not the fee structure that's necessarily the pro

The time to do this was 2 years ago, when netbooks were desperately looking for an operating system. Now they have adapted themselves (slightly higher cost/specs) to Windows XP, and people are fairly comfortable with that. The market is est

That's not a fair comparison. You can't switch mid flight or mid cloud crash. But you can evaluate safety records every time you feel inclined and swap your airlines at some point. If GAE fails to live up to the better-then-DIY-on-average p
