I very well may be wrong about this, but I believe thats not exactly true. Parker required the fasted launch as of its time because it had to shed the momentum of the earth that it started with to be able to fall into that gravity well. quo

I sort of expect that nothing can be assumed when talking about strings and characters anymore. Waiting for the post on HN one day that says that its in the unicode spec that characters can animate or be in superposition until observed…

In my experience the difficulty and time requirements ramp up considerably after about day 10. I think that plus the fact that its Christmas time makes it hard to complete the whole thing - I would even wager that some significant fraction

There are two main ways we detect exoplanets. The primary way that I believe accounts for the vast majority of planets we have detected is the transit method. Basically we watch the light from a star very closely and look for a dip in the a

I replied to a sister comment similarly, but the one resource that we are severely limited by is time. There were events that were far more common in the early universe that we may never see now. Rare things could happen at any time. The re

I totally understand this from a rational standpoint, but if you take that to its logical conclusion, you expect that nothing will happen in that year that is very interesting or rare, so why look at all? Sure, our timescales are nothing, m

Thanks for the info! I expected it was something like this, that you expect the increased sensitivity is worth it. I just wish we had more observatories running in different sensitivities - we've just got to get the cost down, thats al

I replied to a sister comment with an example. HSTORE can take a whole row and turn it into an HSTORE value, plus HSTORE has an operator of `-` that will diff two HSTORE values. So combine that with the OLD and NEW that you get in the trigg

So we do something similar, using HSTORE to diff the old and new records, which then allows us to easily tell what was changed in the case of an update. Useful for many kinds of things, but especially forensics.
