If you have code for an Arudino, you can make a board that uses an AVR microcontroller (made by Atmel[0]) with that same code. It may be possible to use a cheaper AVR if you don't need the same functionality (eg, if you aren't using hardwa

I think the figure of added costs is sensationalist at best. The Velodyne LiDAR sensor alone that Google uses is $85,000. I think we'll see self-driving cars soon enough, but I'd be surprised if the Old Guard of car manufacturers will lead

The gamble being made here is that customers want to buy clothing that is popular. I wonder if this might signal the exact opposite of what a shopper is looking for. Instead of clothing being an expression of unique individuality, he or sh

The physical calculator allows students to use this calculator in the classroom. If a student was using a smartphone on a test, how does the teacher know at cheating is not going on? That said, this calculator does allow a no-estimation-ne

Seems like one of the people behind this, joshbegley, is hellbanned on HN. His comments on this page so far are just showing up dead. Any ideas as to why this is? It makes me wonder about entering my email address on his site. Edit: If yo

The reason that $1000 at 90% odds and $900 at 100% odds are used in this example is the expected value is the same in both cases, making the situations 'equivalent'. A 90% chance of losing $9000 has an expected value of -$8100.

It's about $10 cheaper than that from Amazon or in stores, but sure. It adds weight. Neither are a large enough weight to impact your carrying of an iPad (the smart cover is nearly 5 oz! :), and if you lift the iPad up to look at somethin

There are two issues with extended text entry on an iPad: the lack of tactile feedback, and the tradeoff of typing and viewing ergonomics. They've added tactile feedback, but you still need to keep the iPad near horizontal in order to type

You can get your shared items (and a few other things) as JSON here: http://www.google.com/reader/settings?display=import This isn't very useful to the average user, but I'm sure any HN reader can handle this.

Google Reader circa yesterday provided an inbox-style interface for all of your content. A feed had read and unread items, and folders allowed you to compose macro-inboxes, and (this is the change) shared content was treated in the same way

A great read on the topic exists in book format, The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint, by data visualization expert Edward Tufte. Part of this book is freely available, discussing the involvement of PowerPoint in the Columbia disaster: http
