I think the answer to your questions and thoughts can be responded to with "It depends." Truly, these cases and their outcomes can not be predicted, no matter how clear cut they appear to be. Here's a great summary of some

Since you are aiming at more casual users, consider intuitive intelligent audio controls. Beginner and often intermediate users often do not understand the importance of good audio in a video. When they do it still takes a steep learning

Have you tried uMatrix by the author of uBlock Origin? It takes getting used to but really allows you granular control of 3rd party requests on both a site-by-site and global basis. Word of warning, most uMatrix users I've met say it b

Your fears are not unfounded. I have had clients even in recent (<5yr) history that stored all their credit-card details unencrypted in the database - including CVV. One client had a single table with all CC info including name, address

Great advice from this article in general, as I found from 6 years of working from home. That said, there's a fine line of making yourself available and working too much. The first position where I worked from home full time, my manage

Somewhat Unrelated. I noticed that the wayback machine no longer lists historical sites if the latest/last revision of robots.txt denies access. Has anyone else experienced this? In the late-90's I helped build one of the first f

Unrelated to the story, but I've had a similar experience as to some of the stories described in the article - where a cascade of unseen problems landed on my lap and I took the blame even though little of it was my doing. (Note, this

I know some people use SSL and TLS interchangeably, but just in case, I'd recommend using TLS not SSL. SSLv2 and SSLv3 have known security issues and have been superseded by TLSv1 and above. Also, here's a great server side TLS g

With a Linux host, you can oversubscribe KVM guests, and I'm starting to see it more frequently. Still haven't seen as bad as shared hosts, however. Kernel Same-Page Merging allows you to de-dup common pages across virtual hosts

You can reserve entire machines, even using VPS. Heck, you can even luck out and be the first VPS on a newly provision host. Chances of either, slim. Still I try not to assume when I don't have the data.
