Something that converts abstract glyphs to bezier curves and projects that to your eyes deserves attention and care. Typefaces bring the abstract idea of what a glyph is semiologically, to the physical 2D space. Made up of bezier curves, th

Feedback noted, I don't think the new JetBrains UI is out for testing. I need to find time to write an extremely detailed post mortem of a user interface gone wrong. I did one for Apple a while ago although not as detailed as I'd

I think these are reasons why UI has regressed continually in last 10-15 years. No one speaks up. Usually casted as “UI always changes, get used to it. Grumpy people will complain for any change. See Gmail.” I can understand why Apple chang

The central point of the article missed right over you. The critique is about the culture that surrounds: changes in UI for no real reason other than subjectivist opinions, design trends, fashion or what-others-are-doing, unoriginality, hom

I use dozens of keyboard shortcuts in PyCharm. Most editing takes place without reaching for the mouse (vim plugin). GUI is still an integral part of Jetbrains IDEs regardless of how good you're with shortcuts. There are 10,000 things

I interned at the GE Wind division in Greenville, South Carolina. It's under GE Energy, and it was a complete and utter disaster. This was around 2005 and the entire GE Wind division was recently acquired from the Enron meltdown. Part

Yea we used Cognex cameras to read millions of chips, trays, heat sinks, carriers, wafers, etc. Datamatrix is industrial grade. Cognex also has proprietary decoding algorithms which would detect the faintest and half damaged codes.

For those who are curious, these are 2DID Datamatrix codes, also used in the semiconductor industry extensively to mark wafers and chips. If you pick up an Intel CPU, its going to have a couple of tiny datamatrix codes: https://e

A friend of mine suggested this and I didn't like the idea of putting the OS on there especially that it is a virtual machine. There are a couple of things that made this setup nice though: PCIe bifurcation (4x4x4x4) lanes straight to

Right, what was not clear to me was that raid configuration and snapshots are also part of the file system. Usually, that's done through hardware cards or software raid where the configuration sits not on the file system (?) (Intel VRO

Yea, TrueNAS comes with a jails manager which has nothing to do with NAS. It's incredibly feature rich: https://static.ixsystems.co/uploads/2020/04/image-4.png Plus the setup now gets intricately coupled

I use zfs-auto-snapshot for snapshots, it works great. I think the only thing I would want is early warning for a disk failure. I'll probably automate that. TrueNAS feels extremely heavy with too many features I don't need. There

I build a zfs based NAS last year[1], after 10 months of usage, I have nothing but positive things to say. One thing I didn't understand conceptually at first is that ZFS is standalone and not dependent on the host OS. This was not cle

Technically, the nozzle provides thrust in the hot gas path. Point taken though. In jet engines, you're correct, most of the power is robbed by the turbine. :-)

> In a turbofan, the turbine mostly rotates the various stages and creates very little thrust. That undersells the turbine. Turbine powers not only the various compressor stages, but also the turbofan itself. All power comes from the tur
