Wholeheartedly agree on OSGi. Disastrous implementations. I worked with servicemix and still have nightmares around class path issues and crazy bundle scoping rules. A plain old maven built jar with shading works much better in practice, b

It is a matter of tooling. One data center or ten, it does not matter much with proper tooling. We deploy to seven data centers with a click of a button, with rollback, staggered deployment etc. Centralized logging using ELK gives us great

Building Microservices needs discipline, an eye to find reusable components and extracting them and as you said, investment in infrastructure. Monoliths invariably tend to become spaghetti over time, and completely impossible to any non t

I agree. I'm a fan of pull model for metrics, where app logs very granular numbers and whoever wants metrics at whatever granularity will pull from these logs into splunk/tsdb etc. Let the app be simple in emitting metrics

Indeed. Error rates, latency distribution, max latencies, percentiles (as a special case of distribution) and throughput give a good picture of how a system is working

Yes! This one is important. Error rates are very important to track too

While 99% latency provides a good measure of QoS, it does not tell me the scale at which it is operating. I may have a service that renders some static content, say a hundred times a day. My 99th percentile latency is < 50ms. Now my obse

"you honestly just sound like a cheapskate". Ad-hominem? Well, well, anyways :) I never said I don't play by whatever practices each country has around tipping. I just don't like it.

I am against tipping as a practice in general. Tipping or not tipping results in preferential treatment, subtle attitude changes, depending on the amount tipped and so on. It's more about the social discomfort I have around tipping, ra

Diversity lottery is not available for India, China and some others. Isn't the eb2 category for rest if the countries pretty much current? Working on an h1b for a year or two for any company should be enough time to get a greencard.

HBase + Phoenix is the closest I know of. Though, the cost of covered indexes is duplication. Phoenix also provides local/global indexes, giving an optimization choice b/w read heavy vs write heavy patterns

Awesome! Now lets do it for 1B rows, and then 10 Billion and then some. It is well known that for small datasets NoSQL is no better , if not worse, than an RDBMS.

What other stream processing frameworks do you prefer in the place of spark streaming?Storm is pretty mature, but does not play very well with YARN last I tried. Flink looks pretty good, but is fairly new. Samza is another one. I'm cur

I'm from India and this is anecdotal, but I've never met a person who's intolerant to dairy. I heard about lactose intolerance only after moving to the US. In most part of India, dairy is an integral part of diet.

While I do not agree with the premise of the quote, I don't find "customization" and "multi-device synch" tech-hipsterish - its exactly what happens with many phone app/webapp combinations.

One thing that people don't talk much about is the network overheads, marshaling/unmarshaling, which adds up really quickly in a microservices architecture - imagine pulling large amounts of data 3 layers out, with all that overhe
