Joyent came out with such a product in 2007, called Slingshot. I remember it being quite slow (…for what was supposed to be a desktop app), but functional. http://joyeur.com/2007/03/22/joyent-slingshot/

I've had dedicated servers, shared hosts and individual domains with them for a few years. I had a hardware failure on a server once, the HD died, they replaced it in a few hours, it was handled pretty efficiently. The price is really low.

Awesome. I tried using SongBird ( http://www.getsongbird.com/ ) for a while, but it never seemed natural to switch to a specialized browser every time I landed on a music blog. This is a much more user friendly proposition. One major proble

Ahh, people love their compiracy theories, don't they… I lived for years in village just next to Pont Saint Esprit, and my step-dad investigated this story in the mid-80's, interviewing directly the director of the local asylum, a first han

He correctly points out that LaTeX is a typesetting tool, and that Word and Writer are word processors, two very different approaches to text. So why compare LaTeX to them, and not, for example, Adobe InDesign, or FrameMaker?

For me the single best web experience improvement in the last year has been to install ClickToFlash: http://rentzsch.github.com/clicktoflash/ Suddenly, Safari didn't slow down or crash unexplicably, fantastic.

As Mark Hall noted on his blog ( http://mhallville.com/2010/01/13/google-china/ ) the debate seems to have polarized between two camps: the moralists and the cynics. Lost in the noise is the fact that the Chinese government is not longer on

I agree with the comments. I have a handful of small apps that could really use background processes to create thumbnails and send confirmation emails, it's very lightweight and doesn't warrant a full $36/m dyno. Still, I'd recommend Heroku

Rounded corners are supported in Webkit Gecko and Presto, and not in Trident of course. Variables are provided by SASS, a CSS pre-processor language/framework.

Do you care to elaborate on how moving to Heroku "has dropped the hosting fees for [your clients] down to zero" ?

I've always used -moz-inline-block for FF2, and it has worked for me so far, although PPK warns that it's not always the case: http://www.quirksmode.org/css/display.html#inlineblock But at this point in time, I'd drop FF2 support (pixel p

I can see the point of using the video tag, because you can achieve better compatibility (iPhone!) and a smother experience (no Flash player crashes with native video support). But I don't see the real benefit of using the tags that only pr

Here's an interesting scenario: the Opera installer asks you if you want to install the "Freedom" service, if you agree, it installs a background server (always on, launched on start up). This service is a local web server + web application

In this age of massive botnets, I don't see the point of grouping the requests by IP address, as he suggests: the attacker will just use his 500000 different machines to attack a single account. So you should probably keep track of the user
