That's the idea in theory. In practice, it's clear that upvotes/downvotes are often used to guide the discussion in the direction that the voter wants it to go, which is often towards his/her innate biases.

No, what some for-profit colleges are doing is despicable and amounts to defrauding the federal government. These behaviors include heavy-handed marketing to potential students who are unlikely to see a benefit from the education and who ar

In that vein, I was way too excited to see Mark Zuckerberg hacking in Emacs in The Social Network . It's so rare that movies get this stuff right that when they do I can't help but smile.

I've been trying to find summer housing on craigslist, and it's been mostly a failure. The biggest issue is the lack of semantic information in the listings. For example, every listing has a price, but it's mostly useless for filtering beca

You could let users enter their a city and fetch the data locally via javascript. That way, the usage counts against their IP's API limit, not yours. Edit: To be more clear, this would only work for showing the data to the user that request

The difference is, Apple's 30% is a requirement to do business on their platform. Apple can charge whatever they want because there is no competition--you're not allowed to use other providers. Your only option is to leave iOS, which isn't

Actually, you've got it almost backwards. If people are worrying that there's a bubble, there probably isn't. Bubbles form when everybody thinks things are worth more than they are. This produces a positive feedback loop whereby investors b

I love it. There is nothing else that makes it so easy to replicate between various systems. And with its HTTP API, it's possible to write javascript apps that talk directly to the db, without a need for any server-side code.

This seems pretty crazy, as the comparable iPad (16GB WiFi+3G) retails for $630. It will also be difficult to build up a large install base without a cheaper, wifi-only model. And while at the moment the Xoom has some features the iPad does

I don't think the main problem is companies not valuing women, because it starts much earlier. University CS departments are tilted very heavily towards men (~10:1 at my school) so there are far, far fewer women graduating with CS degrees a

This sounds great. The weakest part of sproutcore right now is the documentation, which has actually gotten worse since I first learned 14 months ago due to bit rot. Fixing that will go a long way towards increasing adoption.
