I've tried developing Ruby on Ubuntu using the ruby packages, and it's been a huge pain every time. They've also handled ruby1.9 in a maddening way--with separate 1.9 binaries for everything. And rubygems is very broken (though it's probabl

This is the broken window fallacy [1]. If the company didn't have to pay developers to maintain bad code, they could invest that money in something more economically useful, like new products. [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_window

This article reads like "yeah Erlang has a lot of cool features, but it's really scary to an OO programmer like me." > I can’t imagine how you can organize large code-bases in Erlang or even work as team, and this doesn’t feel right to

It's a neat idea, but wouldn't work for any image format that's actually used. The code targets PPM, which is an ASCII-based image format. In a binary format like JPG or PNG, different values of zero would be indistinguishable.

Actually, this is one of my favorite features of Dropbox. It may occasionally make me do some additional work to merge files, but it's worth it for the peace of mind: I know that Dropbox will never delete anything I don't want it to or eras

Frankly, trying to do anything even slightly off the beaten path with capistrano leads to madness in my experience. If this is simpler to extend past just deploying rails apps I can definitely see a place for it in my workflow.

Where is the red circle drawn? How large is it? What shade of red? How are those arbitrary values chosen, and how do I choose others? The inherent problem with NLP is that human languages are imprecise and ambiguous. For an example of the p

The answer (in general, though not in this particular case because the product is free) is price discrimination[0]. The basic idea is that by segmenting their customers roughly by ability to pay (students and seniors will on average pay l

Trying the demos on both a Galaxy S and an iPad, I'm struck by how slow everything feels. Buttons don't react when you press them, but a second later, which isn't acceptable when you're competing with native applications. However, it looks

OS X disk images (DMGs) can be created with a background image. Most developers take advantage of this fact to make it really, really obvious what you're supposed to do. For example, here is what DoubleTwist's DMG looks like: http://cl.ly/
