Yes, we do. HTTPS has the benefit of some confidentiallity, meaning only the hostname is visible to an eavesdropper (eg your friendly government).

If I recall correctly the issue with ios xmpp clients is that you cannot run them in the background. Instead you must either have a provider that does push notifications or the client has to run constantly, draining the battery and closing

Github requires users to be logged in to an account. That's a hurdle and very anti-privacy.
