Sounds literary, if a bit grandiloquent, more than anything. It was once considered "good style" and books from the XIXth and XXth centuries are full of such sentences. See the works of James Jeans, John McPhee, Carl Sagan, and th

Not exactly what you are looking for, but you may still want to take a look at Moore's /Foundations of Mechanical Accuracy/. IIRC, it contains a section on the evolution of machining since the early 1800s and covers the trans

Probably not the cheapest nor the easiest way, but take a look at Cynthion: https://greatscottgadgets.com/cynthion/ On the hardware side, it probably has what you need (and more).

AFS (on which DFS was based) lives on as OpenAFS [0]. And there is a commercial evolution/solution from AuriStor [1]. [0]: https://openafs.org/ [1]: https://www.auristor.com/filesystem/

Left academia, still using LaTeX for about every document (not counting org-mode documents for my own use). At this point, using "common" text processors (Word, Writer, ...) still (?) feels like torture.

Scientific text editors, you mean? ;) I suspect it is actually worse than that and that they are actually subject to the Lindy effect ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindy_effect ).

To a french ear, it sounds like a (bad) translation from English. For instance, "a été testée au combat" is meaningless in French. The same idea in idiomatic French would be "a subi l'épreuve du feu". And I guess th

Another story involving many of these topics is told in Ada Palmer's Terra Ignota series. Very different (less space opera, more history) but quite interesting too.

For those interested, there is also OpenUC2 on this niche: https://github.com/openUC2/UC2-GIT It would be interesting to see how the two systems compare.

Then, you have Mindustry and its thorium reactors. IIRC, they don't need to be connected to turbines like in Factorio to generate power, however bad things (TM) happen if they are destroyed or if their coolant supply is disrupted...
