I heard one of the issues is to prevent leaks through the ground connection. It seems special circuits ("crypto grounds" ?) are needed to filter the ground connection while still allowing it to work normally if an electrical fault

In my experience, hardware-related issues mostly happens with stuff that was just released. If you don't mind waiting a few months before ordering, there are usually few problems. As for UI inconsistencies, I believe they depend a lot

There is more or less the same issue in academia. Once (hyper)-specialized on some micro-topic, it becomes quite hard (due to workload and pressure to publish) to switch to something else.

Not really. Even Word for Windows and Word for Mac don't always render them identically, and in Office 365 it may be something else! And when you add LibreOffice Writer and the like into the equation, all bets are off.
