Choosing people primarily because they add diversity is tokenism. There are processes that are effective in obtaining underrepresented speakers that are effective and don't require choosing people because they're a minority. We should use t

"If no, then the result really is inexcusable." I explained why I disagree with that. Being in the tech industry doesn't obligate one to fix its problems. It'd be nice if people tried to. "Inexcusable" doesn't apply. You even called it "t

Progressive taxation is not leftist. Americans broadly agree on the concept. A 2011 WSJ/NBC poll found that 81% of Americans approved of increasing taxes on those who make more than $1 million. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405274

I'd put the date a little later: 1913. The ratification of the 17th Amendment got rid of the states' representatives in the federal government. Most citizens don't care about the particular divisions of power between levels of government, a

The west coast was populated by the taxpayers of the east coast in order to prevent it from falling into the hands of another power. Those "favorable terms" weren't charity; they were an investment that has paid off. This is a dumb argume

I don't understand why you think it's instructive to compare government investments to venture capital. The government engages in plenty of investments, and none of them operate that way.

Southern California has paid off that investment many times over, and Nevada and Arizona probably have as well.

This seems like a "might makes right" sort of argument. Since the American government is much more powerful than the Afghan government, we can mistreat Afghans. If we did the same thing to British citizens, there'd be quite an uproar. I thi

This argument isn't going to go anywhere novel. The point is that such policies help some impoverished people make more, but they make other impoverished people make less.

There are jobs that are illegal because the highest price people are willing to pay for them is lower than the minimum wage. The potential buyers and sellers of those services would not be harmed if they were legal—they would benefit.

The main concern about Guantanamo isn't the treatment of prisoners. It's the fact that people are being held without trial—making the comparison to the Gulags rather apt. Also, you're correct that people usually care less when injustices ar
