In case you haven't seen the long thread of comments on the pull request that lead to this blog post: https://github.com/antirez/lamernews/pull/8

What I like most about this is that it is a non-trivial, non-toy example of using Redis effectively. Thanks antirez!!

It's interesting that antirez mentioned in a blog post that Steve Jobs was not his hero, because he values different types of contributions and accomplishments. His post got flagged and removed from HN, whereas this one seems to be fine. I

I'm disappointed F# was not on his list. Not surprised though.

I agree that the syntax and semantics are uninspiring (you could say the same about Scala). Where it shines IMHO is in the core library ( http://www.dartlang.org/docs/api/index.html ). Look there and you will find some interesting classes t

Please allow type inference wherever possible: I shouldn't need to write 'Point p = new Point(2, 3);' var p = new Point(2,3); should be inferred as a Point

For non-mainstream programmers "scary learning curve" is a plus. The desire to be challenged is a healthy thing, why not appeal to that type?

"Siri, open Facebook app" (or whatever other non-built-in app) I think that is a use case that would be pretty popular, unfortunately it does not look like that is something Siri can do yet. Maybe a future release.

He sums up one of the major problems well: The greatest innovation in this release of the iPhone (Siri) is actually just a software thing. It is really cool, but they could have put it in iOS5 for iPhone 4 users to have as well. On the hard

Agreed, I can't dis it because it's what introduced me to OOP. That said, I'm glad I haven't had to do any VB for 8 years now. There are a host of other languages (Javascript, Ruby, C#, Erlang, Coffeescript, even C++) I prefer to program wi

From what I've heard, you can't use Task<T> for WinRT components that expose async methods. Instead you have to use IAsyncOperation as the return type. This limitation seems kind of annoying IMHO. Reference: Miguel de Icaza's blog p

Perhaps by complementary he means: - Scala allows you to break away from the share-nothing, strictly immutable constraints of Erlang when you really need to do that for performance. - Erlang has OTP, Scala has access to the full ecosystem

I used Mog for a while and was pretty happy. It's pretty similar to Rdio, except that it has a (claimed) larger library of tracks.

Why not just learn both of them? It would not hurt you to have more than one language you are good at, especially if they are very different from each other.

As a .NET dev, I have to kind of agree with you. While I have been quite pleased with the evolution of C# over the years and am stoked about F#, MS's involvement in Node.js, ASP.NET MVC, etc., I can't say that about the .NET developer commu

I would hope that MS's solution for some mundane problem has changed since 2001. 10 years is a long time (especially for development tools/frameworks)... and I'm glad for the innovation that has happened over the past 10 years even though t

I'm pretty sure that Credit Suisse is using F# (a derivative of OCaml) extensively. Also, I've seen quite a few posts on Don Syme's blog about other F# job openings in the financial industry.
