Of course it's a systemic problem. But individuals are components of that system. If you don't punish people who engage in fraud, you remove a valuable disincentive against fraud. So while the system as a whole needs to be reformed, making

Cool to read this. I've actually built a library in CoffeeScript that enables a lot of the "relational programming" ideas expressed in this paper. http://github.com/nathansobo/monarch

This post doesn't make much sense to me either. JavaScript encourages an object-oriented style, but with prototype-inheritance and flexible method binding (where `this` in a function is determined by the caller). CoffeeScript's features emb

It's so ridiculous that people always want QA testers to be programmers. My fiance is a fantastic QA tester but has no interest in programming. She interviewed at Twitter, which at the time did not have a single manual QA tester keeping an

There's a long road ahead. It's way too soon to pick a winner. Many people will have lots of opportunities to engage with Google's offerings for many years to come. And they'll have lots of time to refine their products. I think Google+ was

Agreed. I prefer writing UI code on the client. But you need quality abstractions because it is more complex than doing everything on the server where all your data is at arm's length. I've written two frameworks that make it easier... Spac

I've spent far more programming hours pair-programming than working alone. It works for me. This fall I decided I wanted to learn Cocoa, so I called up Pivotal Labs and asked if they had any iOS projects I could work on. They paired me with

I want to use Vim, but there are a few specific limitations I can't get past, in order of importance: NerdTree is hard to use. Other editors I've used (TextMate, IntelliJ, RubyMine) have a simple "project drawer" that doesn't think it's a t

Gorgeous! I will definitely give it a try when I need to build a static site for the library I'm working on. I like the scrolling effect with the links on the documentation site.

Hey, thanks for checking it out. I'm the founder of the site. I myself have had some qualms about the low-brow nature of some of the discussions. I think as the site's interface evolves it's becoming easier to discuss deeper ideas. Here's a

Well, in the example terms of service that I've read, they discuss a legal agreement between two parties, the user and a corporate entity operating the site. Otherwise the agreement is between what... the user and me personally? Seems not s

Google should add "native" apps to Chrome OS by adding javascript-based APIs for controlling processes, accessing the file system, etc. Essentially pitch the browser as a GUI layer on top of linux, much as Cocoa sits atop Darwin. You could

I've tried css-dryer, which is similar in concept to server side LESS and SASS. I found it to be problematic on a large project because even though the CSS was compact in its source form, what actually got compiled ended up getting huge. It
