Couldn't agree more. If you can't put in one weekend of hard work to give you a leg up on the competition for something as important as _your career_ you are just being dumb and lazy.

I think the big misconception is that a side project has to be a prolific open source project. As someone who has interviewed developers, someone who has _anything_ on a GitHub page stands out in the crowd. Even just a folder with a few bat

Developers are more akin to musicians or artists than a marketing person. Yes, I do expect musicians to practice their instrument and learn new material in their free time, at least a little bit. A musician who _only_ played during paid gig

Everyone is responsible for showcasing their skills and selling themselves. People who refuse to do that are only hurting themselves.

Most people would not think twice if a potential employer interviewed them for 30-60 minutes and then asked them to do a follow-up interview. It's not that unusual to have 3 interviews before getting hired. But if you ask them to do a

What about the time it takes for interviews? Is it being disrespectful to take up an hour of their time for an interview? What if you do a 2nd interview for another hour? What if you have a 3rd? It's not unusual to have 2 or 3 intervie

The bottom line is, each developer is responsible for showcasing their own skill. One of the best ways to do that is through sharing programs you've written on GitHub. If you don't want to do that, you better find some other way t

If I owned a carpentry company, and I was trying to hire a carpenter, yes, I would ask them to build me something. Maybe not a dog house, but a bird house. You don't think that would be reasonable? "If you want us to hire you as a

If you were hiring a musician, and you asked them to perform an audition. Would you accept the response, "Sorry, I don't work for free." "Well do you have any recordings you can show me instead?" "No, I do othe

What about an artist or a musician? Would you expect a musician to practice and get better in their free time or only play their instrument during paid gigs?

What % of candidates have side projects to show you? When I did interviews, I saw probably less than 10% have any side projects to show.

Here are the sentiments that I took away from this article, even if it was not the intention. - “If I don’t have the time to be THE BEST, I won’t bother even trying to be great.” - “I am okay, even proud to be a mediocre developer. I don’t

I have a feeling it is nothing ground breaking. I bet they are just using biometrics to replace the password so it's something like "Two factors: fingerprint + authenticator app code"

I don't think this is good advice. An algorithm like this could easily be reverse engineered if someone had more than one. Considering how many places have password breaches it's not that inconceivable someone would get a hold of

At what point is a manager allowed to tell an employee their clothing is inappropriate for work? What line must be crossed before that happens? Ever? Are they ever allowed to say "that outfit is inappropriate"?

I am with you. The manager may not be nicest person around, but I don't think they did anything wrong really. Tank tops are inappropriate office attire IMHMO and this girl does not want to accept that.

All of those things she lists are not really sexism. The only one that even comes close is the lady telling her not to wear a tank top. Honestly, I agree too. I think tank tops are not appropriate office attire. This girl just needs to grow

Your title insinuates that security is not lasting....computer security has been around for decades, pretty much since the inception of the internet, and it is not going to go away. So what do you mean security is not lasting?
