I'm not against advertising. I just think most of it is done badly and in poor taste. If you want to sell me something in an entertaining or classy way I am more receptive than I would be from you just shouting at me. I think "sho

Well I use it (and I assume most people use it) because I don't want to see ads. Advertising on the web is largely just obnoxious, ugly, and crude. Also the relentless tracking is a little creepy, so there is another small benefit to u

I also had these when I was a kid (and Legos, K'Nex, Erector sets, model car kits, etc). These didn't have as much of an impact on me as some of the other toys. There isn't really as much flexibility as there is with sets lik

It's probably fine. Back in the day (early 00s) I used Gentoo and I think pretty much everyone used march (because why not?) with no real negative side effects. It may be a little more buggy with uncommon or new architectures. I did ha

Now it seems ISPs have been holding back the Internet (in the US). There's almost no competition on price, bandwidth, latency, etc. Nobody is pushing the envelope.

I believe that is the point of the linked email. Some distributions have less symlinked to something else (e.g. the lesspipe script) for convenience. Plain 'ol less isn't that much of a problem.

I'm sure FreeBSD is probably better at memory management than Linux (considering his Desktop issues) but wouldn't it make sense for the OS to nearly max out memory usage as long as applications can make use of it?

This sort of thing is very important. One of the (many) issues that hinders open source projects is that it is difficult to jump into the code, even for experienced developers. Every project can benefit by making contributing easy and build

Was the naming an honest mistake or deliberate marketing move? :) I've heard absolutely nothing about Groupon recently (they are selling a POS now?!) until this happened. Probably an honest mistake, though. Gnome seems an odd choice fo

I wonder why there doesn't seem to be any implementation for AirPrint/ePrint in Linux. Seems like a good lightweight alternative to CUPS for wireless systems/devices. Also, I am curious: is CUPS still used in OSX?

At the end of the semester, students who enjoyed the course should just tip their professors. Adding a real free-market incentive would increase class size and teaching quality, right? Let's let the invisible hand of the market decide
