I'm also a long-time Linux user and while I have seen Linux destroy hardware (X11 was misconfigured and fried an LCD back in the day), it is certainly not common and pretty difficult to do these days. I don't think the risk is high enough t

I have had my side view mirrors setup like this for years and it isn't always better. The first problem is that you cannot see your car in the side view mirror. This doesn't seem like a big deal, but it can be difficult to judge where every

We already have proven, well defined method of DNT already: private browsing. You are still being tracked with private browsing. You IP, user agent, OS, screen resolution, etc. are enough to connect the dots in most situations. This is a

This has to do with Medicare specifically, not out of pocket costs for a self-pay patient or regular insurance. It is robbery and also probably a large part of the reason procedures are so expensive for the rest of us. Regular insurance rei

I don't care if it is bad UX, I prefer it. I also turn off all the different types of preloading in Chrome, but that's another story. The loading of a page hardly takes any time at all, and I generally have to reload the page when I finally

Reddit has some siloing as well, but they don't prohibit memes, which is why the content looks the way it does. Reddit hardly prohibits anything. Individual subreddits do filter a lot of content, including memes. This doesn't really fix e

Perhaps this was a well-intentioned gesture, but it was carried out poorly. This reminded me of a great article on how to provide thoughtful and useful analysis. Perhaps read that instead: "This is What Real Analysis Looks Like" http://www

How does ext* move files around to reduce fragmentation if the disk is full? I'm glad you asked. Take a look at your filesystem properties: # tune2fs -l /dev/blah In there you'll see a property called "Reserved Block Count". That is

Opera Software also owns Fastmail.fm and AdMarvel. It would be kind of sad to see Fastmail go to Facebook. Though I doubt there's much truth to this rumor.

No, it is not the 4HWW Tim Ferriss. He spells his last name differently and is not a programmer (look at tferris's submission history).

So when is someone going to start a company offering small startups patent troll insurance? Obviously, Congress isn't going to fix anything. Other solutions need to be explored.

You indicate that the DMCA isn't powerful enough when in fact it also happens to be too powerful. It is a bit of a blunt instrument and is frequently used incorrectly for censorship and not just rights protection. A good "technical" solut

Network transparency is not a "crucial" feature. 90% of Linux desktop users do not use network transparency. The other 10% can (assuming Wayland is successful) use Xorg, do without, or use VNC (yes, I know it is not the same thing).
