Well, why not organize one over there? It doesn't have to start a big, just find 2 other HNers who can meet on a Friday night, set the location and then announce it on your blog/HN/meetup.com.

For a moment I thought it was. "Look, here in SF even homeless people are hipper than you (they know this designer you've never heard of)!". But after reading the comments here, it's clear OP is legit and means it seriously.

Interesting. I speak Japanese and know the word 矛盾, but I had never paid attention to the meaning of its constituent kanjis (I don't think I've ever studied those characters separately).

In my opinion it's because 1) generally speaking, politics is not considered a good topic on HN, 2) people often bring up the Palestinian-Israeli conflict even when it has little or no relevance to the article in question, 3) it usually com

I think GP comment mentioned the r/games vs. r/gaming example to emphasize the effect of moderation. For most topics, though, there's only 1 major subreddit so a recommendation system would be pretty much pointless.

But how come you accept the claim they're "stupid"? Are you saying that SAT is not a good measure of intelligence but Kahneman's tests are?

It's called "delivery fee", not "delivery cost". It makes no sense to require a business to charge fees solely based on variable costs.

I'm not knowledgeable on Python and Redis, but very likely you're doing something wrong with either of them. Parsing fixed-length fields should take no time at all, so the bulk of the time should be taken by reading the file and inserting t

Anyone knows why Berkeley, Stanford, Harvard, etc, don't even appear? Were they not included in the study? And if so, can the study still be considered meaningful?

That sounds pretty bad if true. Is there a point of working for a startup if there's no financial upside, only the downside? Not being in the US, I'm curious if people getting laid-off from funded startups get severance packages.

I wouldn't bet either way. Just because people will be buying x in the future, it doesn't mean that today's top x companies will still be around in 50 years. The computer market is now much bigger than 50 years ago, but many computer co

FWIW: there's something fishy about the "random subway station". Jiro's place is currently located in Ginza, a rather upscale neighbourhood in Tokyo.

You're looking at Jiro charging $600 a head (looking at his website, the course starts at $350 but let's assume an average $600 for the sake of the argument), but for every Jiro there are other 50 sushi masters out there who are probably as

I don´t think OP is bothered that the founders cashed out. Saying that company Foo got a $40M investment usually means the company got that much extra capital. If most of the money is just going to buy existing shares, then it´s misleading
