I've done upgrades on absolutely massive codebases for java to JDK7 and JDK8 and have never had anything but minor issues. Very rarely does something break backwards compatibility.

If you're on mac, try out Alternote (an evernote client). I used to use evernote but have since switched over to vimwiki. Like you, I did not find OneNote better than evernote.
