You do raise an interesting point. I think calling jail time what you called it is a bit extreme but yeah, lots and lots of people do get thrown in jail here. I don't have a good answer as to what I would consider "just punishment" by the s

I live in the US (bay area) now, but I've lived for significant periods of time in the middle east and asia in the past. I know the US gets a bad rap as far as personal freedom is concerned (high incarceration rate, capital punishment, etc)

No, you got it right (I'm not american, but I live here). And I absolutely agree with you - like caning, capital punishment has no place in an enlightened country, and I sure hope it is eradicated from the US, and throughout the world, soon

Are you saying that singapore doesn't cane people, or that it doesn't cane people for littering? Maybe you are right about the latter (I can only find evidence that you will be arrested, perhaps not caned, for littering) but caning is most

It depends whether you think it is ok for the government: - to ban chewing gum - to publicly cane people (limited to "6 strokes" for women, how nice) - to enforce capital punishment (i.e. killing people for allegedly killing people) - to li

This is absolutely right. "Oh you create search algorithms at Bing? Mleh. I find that Google's search algorithms are so much better." And you hear this from people who can barely use grep. I think someone's work needs to evaluated on their

That is true. However, Gates' point is that there are health problems faced by poor folk, even in America, that no one there seems to be solving (not a pressing problem, not enough $, etc). India is in a unique position to solve these issue

You are dismissing the emotional factor; I think this is a fantastic gift. It is most certainly easier to send someone a free "e-card", so why are good old "dumb" paper greeting cards still in vogue?

To echo @adambard, I would've given this a shot as well if you hadn't requested my FB login. I'm very protective of using my FB credentials on a site I don't know much about (probably an irrational fear, but I know I'm not alone.) You will

I've tried the Bose QC and the Shure, and IMO the latter is better at removing ambient sounds. The Shure does not use active noise cancellation like the Bose, but I think it is more effective simply because it fits snugly in your ear like a

Security cameras use MJPEG (Motion JPEG), which works quite similarly to animated GIFs. They're very easy to find as most vendors have a URL pattern. For example, here're a bunch of public security cameras made by Axis: https://www.google.

That may be true, but that's not the claim that MS made. If their ad had shown a VivoTab and an iPad side-by-side playing a widescreen movie, I wouldn't have had a problem with it. (In fact I would've agreed with them that the VivoTab is pr

I don't know, I think it's honest. In the eyes of many business users - myself included - the lack of Office is a legitimate shortcoming of the iPad (albeit one that I personally don't care much about). It would be equally honest and fair f

This was very interesting, thank you. The original Mac keyboard you'd linked to is exactly what I would've expected from Apple. You're right about the control key. IIRC back in the day it was used to actually activate "control" characters t

Perhaps. I really think that the alt/option and control keys can be merged though. In many cases, control is actually used as a modifier. For example, ⌘ + ⇧ + 3 takes a screenshot and saves it on the desktop. What if you wanted to save it t

I agree with you that it's no more difficult that a Windows PC. It's just that when I moved to the Mac platform years ago, I found the general simplicity quite refreshing (yes, even the lack of a right-mouse button!) and was surprised that

You know, I'm a mac convert through and through, but for a company that favors simplicity so much that they create mice with just one button, I've never quite understood why there are SO many modifier keys on a mac. I always get a mild migr
