There is a really good talk (short too) from Moxie Marlinspike on privacy. His talk is very much along the same lines. Definitely worth watching. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qzldtKV1PY

Some issues are removed with a type system and wouldn't require writing tests to verfiy (the compiler would be doing this for you). I wouldn't take that fact as being in favor of using a type system, but more of a reminder that us

I apologize for not being specific. Setting timed expiration is not what I meant. Memcache will fill the entire cache and auto select items to be destroyed, based on current resource availability and order of entry into the cache (FIFO). I

What's better about Redis? Many caching strategies require the storage to auto expire, memcache does this automatically. Redis does not do this (I believe). Is it significantly faster?

Don't even try to blame this on the youth. They are still to apathetic to even count. We only have ourselves to blame for this. It is our mess to fix.

Being embarrassingly parallel and always being parallel are two separate things. I don't see how the risk of bugs that, generally, show themselves under load would ever make puma worth it. What is the advantage over unicorn? Slightly l

I don't understand how people are using multithreaded ruby. Are these people doing something clever that I am not aware of? Or is it just insane amounts of testing? http://stackoverflow.com/questions/15184338/

I've been on the other side of that equation. Building all that stuff by hand leads to incredible waste. Bike shedding, reinventing the wheel and substandard results. Do I like Active Record? No, not really. Do I want to fight with the

Welcome to ageism. Human beings, including technology people, have great difficult accepting good ideas from young people. I suspect it is because we like to hear stories about how something affect something else. For example, one developme

You should install a ruby version manager. Most apps will specify the version in the project (.rvmrc or .ruby-version). If you have a ruby version manager and the required version installed, your system will switch automatically. Installing

I think that pain is a great motivator to refactor the code base. I understand that pain, I have been there. But coming from an IDE that supported code folding, I can say two things about it. First, it only helps marginally. Second, it make

>Syntax / Code folding I was hesitant to add that comment, but it needs to be said. Pushing people into the pit of success is a good thing. Sucks to read 10,000 line files? Stop writing 10,000 line files. I also really like how fast

Clean code is more than just not writing obtuse code. There is a lot of literature on the subject spanning advice about patterns and principles to cookbook recipes for problems and so forth. The challenging part with clean code is that most

We are all mortals at the end of the day. You can choose to study algorithms or you can choose to study clean code. Few have the time to do both. I've noticed that it isn't just algorithms though. People that are really good at re
