Naively, I would have guessed flow rate to increase as radius^2 (cross sectional area). Guessing the reason for extra increased flow is some edge effect / turbulence mechanisms?

> Texas is underwhelming Huh? They started construction less than two years ago; I don’t understand how it can be underwhelming. Par for the course would be “we found a company to dig the foundation” at this point.

> Why should someone emit more than half a ton of CO2e for a new laptop unless they really need it? If this is a serious concern for anyone, it looks like carbon capture runs around $22/ton. So this is an $11 problem.

As a non-crypto-nerd: How viable is it to make a “safe” OpenSSL, which just doesn’t support all the cipher modes (?) that the HN crowd would mock me for accidentally using?

While we’re at it, it’s not clear what “1.9x” means. Does it mean I pay the employer?!?

We all know that a real accident would be all over YouTube, and front page of HN for about a week straight. That we have so many “almost” videos, and a couple “it hit a cone”, but no real collisions seems telling.

So FSD beta testing has been around for what, a couple years? To continue the tortured analogy: We’ve been playing this Russian roulette for millions of miles. How many times to people have to be “almost” shot, but not actually shot, before

How much time are we talking about? I’m maybe 9 months into my batch of Gildan shirts, and haven’t noticed anything yet.

A tip: You can buy decent, unbranded t-shirts from places like [0] for low single digit dollars. I finally got tired of every shirt being subtly different, remembering which ones fit which way, and just bought 15 t-shirts. Same model number

That really doesn’t sound like something Apple would do. My bet is they want to hit a specific price point, between the MBA and the 14” MBP. Possibly school/corporate volume purchase programs are involved.

There must be two pipes, one insulated hot side, and one cold side, right? Otherwise the “used” water would cool the hot water going to the next house. Such a system would presumably be metered by volume, and it’d incentive the right behavi

Government welfare funding, whatever. I’m only trying to illustrate that a billionaire throwing vast amounts of money at a nominally evil thing they want, can easily be offset by society redirecting that money to something “good”. It’s bett

Let’s test that… say Bezos really wanted the bridge gone. If Bezos were to pay $100B, half to the government and half to your favorite charity, would you say that’s a good deal? 10B? 1B? Money doesn’t buy everything, but being too principle

It’s valid to focus on China, because China is where lobbying efforts are best spent. A single huge government making a small change will “do” more than a small government making a small change.

It’d be cool if there was a kind of “feature escrow”. You might pay $20 today, but $5 of that is held and paid to the developer once a specific feature you want is implemented. There’s probably too much overhead to be useful, but it’d be an

Why would the start point make a big difference? Is the assertion that if it started at 1820, you’d see a stair step and then flat from 1920 on? Either way, these graphs look flat from 1920 on. That’s the point of the article.

Huh, this is interesting to me. My house has 400A service (or at least that's the main panel breaker size). 400A at 240V is somewhere in the ballpark of 80kW possible draw. Does something bad happen if I actually use my home's ful
