Unfortunately, public protocols like HTTP need to manage communication between parties that do not trust each other. This is not a legal matter, so there is no necessity to establish motives or plausibility. A secure protocol is charged wit

Thanks, this makes a lot of sense. Just to be clear, I wouldn't attempt to do this at home (so to speak). I was merely curious about the theoretical differences between the alternate approaches.

From the vagueness of your statement, it sounds like these forums fall into the second category of being up to no good in the first place.

This might be a stupid question, but why not hash a message then encrypt the hash with a symmetric cypher instead of trying to mix the key material into the pre-hash value? Is that just much slower?

This a very good intro. Readable, fun and concise. Something that caught my eye though: links now have a rel="noreferrer" option. This sounds like a pretty bad idea. It's not supported by any browsers yet, but if it worked it would blank o

Not only is there no metric, but when we force artificial metrics onto programming teams, we are forcing them to pursue a goal other than the quality of the software itself. Any benefits derived from measurability will be eclipsed by the ba

This is great stuff, definitely will be using it in the future. It's worth noting, though, that this only runs the JavaScript style Regular Expressions. Escape sequences and such things will vary to a degree between different RegEx flavors.

Not all rhetorical tools are tricks. Analogies can be informative when taken with a grain of salt. Presenting an analogy a joke is especially honest because invites the reader to not take the analogy too seriously. So I don't think the open

I might very well be wrong about that, my knowledge of English idioms can be lacking at times. However, in my experience bees are attracted to sugary material like honey even though they themselves make it. And a Google image search returns

There was a press release directly from T-Mobile declaring that the data was gone, and it was most likely not coming back. That's as credible as any news can get, and no organization can be blamed for publishing that. Also, the fact the M

Almost all interview spots on late-night talk shows are pure marketing. Without fail, the interviewee always has a book or a movie coming out. Or, at most, is a former or current politician, seeking publicity for their latest cause (a found

Traditionally Unix filenames can contain everything except for / and null (aka \0). This is why the find utility provides a facility for printing null terminated filenames (-print0), when used in conjunction with xargs -0 this is a fool pro

You are making several big assumptions here: 1. Grad students from non-Ivy PhD programs are useless as research collaborators. 2. People doing CS theory need to be smarter than the average CS PhD. 3. People who go to non-Ivy schools are dum
