I find JavaScript itself to be a pretty usable language (maybe somewhere between Python (easier) and Java (harder) or C++ (harder still)), but the browser DOM environment is a pain to deal with. After understanding Self, I didn't find

JavaScript owes a lot to Self, not only in its runtime but also its prototype-based object design (though perhaps that's something of a liability since class-based object systems turned out to be more popular.)

I appreciate Sun creating things like Java and improving the performance of the JVM (adopting ideas from this Self runtime etc.) I don't know whether it made any money for them, but it certainly helped the rest of the computing field &

Compiler/runtime support via clang and llvm should help I hope. I'd like to get to the point where web browsers (for example) always run with memory-safe compilation and runtime features on every platform. OS kernels would be nice

> platform development It's almost 100% platform development. The iPhone is a walled-garden game platform and Apple treats it like one. To answer your question, it probably isn't sensible to expect Apple to charge a drasticall

Physical modeling is great; music synthesis is usually very practical to do in software since audio frequencies are in KHz, giving you a lot of cycles to spend on each sample. Also links to Julius Smith's home page (and online textbook
