It can do GUIs well, although it takes some finesse to manage user state in an immutable-first language. Check out Fable for building web apps: https://fable.io/ I don't have much experience with Scala, but I think the

F# shines on the back end, where its functional-first style is very adept at crunching data. Think about data flows in your system: Any place where you use LINQ in C# today to select/filter/transform data might be even better in F

I recently cancelled my Washington Post subscription and would love to replace it with something better. Unfortunately, my impression of The Guardian US so far is that it is still very much a UK paper. It’s not bad, but it doesn’t yet have

> It’s not clear why the superellipse would be common and the superhyperbola obscure I think the explanation is pretty obvious: The hyperbola itself is way more obscure than the ellipse to begin with, so it’s not surprising that hyperbol

That would be great if keyboards had keys for those characters and there was a common way to display them on a screen, but they don't and there isn't.

In the ML problem I'm working on now, there are about a dozen simple hyperparameters, and each training run takes hours or even days. I don't think there's any good way to search the space of hyperparameters without a deep un

This is surprising. I had always assumed that the length-of-day function is essentially a sine wave everywhere on the planet, and that the derivative would thus be another sine wave shifted by 90 degrees. When the day length is maximal&#x2F

Agreed. To me, this is reminiscent of the "dot-com bubble" 25 years ago. The internet changed the world permanently, even if the stock market got ahead of itself for a few years. The same is true of generative AI. https:/&#x

Sure, but my point is that guaranteeing a right to health care or education makes little philosophical sense. It’s childish to say that a) these things are good, and b) we want the government to do good things, so therefore c) everyone has

Your example proves my point. If there are no judges, the government has to let you go free. They don’t force anyone to become a judge. A better example might be that your right to a jury trial conflicts with my right to freedom of movement

I grew up on Martin Gardner in the 70's and 80's, so I'm always happy to see him referenced. My favorite physics puzzle of his is: If you heat a solid iron torus, does the radius of the hole in the middle grow or shrink?

I don’t think Trump has the sophistication to be a Russian agent. The sad truth is just that he’s wannabe dictator who admires Putin as a role model. Russia is as surprised at their luck as anyone else.
