Once I'd worked it out - which was after the problems were public and therefore the price had utterly cratered - they were by far the cheapest storage per Gb available at the time (think "by a factor of two"). I would not hav

The deathstars were fantastic, they almost always failed on the outer edges of the platters. So if you only formatted them (filesystem wise) out to capacity-2Gb they were a really cheap option at the time.

Pick a manufacturer and you'll be able to find plenty of horror stories. Some may be worse than others but diversification is the right answer anyway.

A friend of mine who was once at Google mentioned that in a meeting once their SRE group was told by their senior manager roughly "you've broken stuff in $time_period far less than your outage budget, and that probably means you s

This is brilliant and I suspect generalises to "won't" when reading RFCs.

Assuming you have the budget for it a worst case scenario of "I made my son happy while achieving nothing -else-" doesn't strike me as terrible at all.

I'd note that my attempt at "I'm not actually mad at you, but here's an explanation of why your current attitude is counterproductive" (with the obvious caveat I may've been complete wrong) got flagged to death

I think this is more aimed at people who couldn't quite get their head around C and were happy to have a forced function naming style that made tooling easier. (note, I am -shit- at C, but genuinely wonder if I could write this without

If I have that set of semantics I'll use nim compiled to C with ORC attached. You're aiming for something different, and I appreciate the idea even if I never end up using it. In the unlikely case you haven't already read it

This is kinda my opinion too. C is awful, C is terrible, C is almost always the wrong answer. But when it hits the spot, it's a fantastic wrong answer for a bunch of things.

That ... actually seems reasonable? If you need it to be first class visible outside, you declare it outside. I believe I could live with this.

I love being a linux/BSD server admin. I totally cannot be arsed being a desktop admin for either. So I use WSL2+Xsrv to give me my -client- environment on windows and then use that to ssh into servers to actually do stuff. Meanwhile,

VcXsrv + WSL2 means I don't have to care about any of this. Though note I basically only use Windows as a fat driver layer unless I'm playing games (Wintendo!)

I've suffered from "are you connecting to the right database" enough times that I can often psychic debug that problem for others given a couple of lines. Make a mistake enough times and you start to be able to smell it.

"Reading the documentation end to end" is a superpower. Some documentation is a bit large for this, but less than you think because it gets faster with practice. I'd also mention "don't be afraid to source dive on O
