This is usually how I learn also. I find it works extremely effectively if instead of working on your own standalone project, you contribute to another project that already has best practices. That way, you can read through the source cod

The only problem with this is that since it's a static library you need to make sure it's bug free before using it in your project. I would imagine it would be difficult to debug in your project...
